‘War of the Worlds’ Star Eva Longoria (51) Brings Mermaid-Gown Drama Back to the Academy Museum Gala
Eva Longoria is no stranger to the Academy Museum Gala carpet. She has been a regular fixture at the event for years, and in 2024 she served as one of its co-chairs alongside Nicole Kidman, Salma Hayek Pinault, Tyler Perry and Dr. Eric Esrailian. That history gives each of her appearances a bit of extra buzz.
Her recent gala looks have also been a study in contrasts. In 2024 she wore a black Georges Hobeika gown with sequins and cutouts, paired with jewelry by Simon G. A year later she switched to a shimmering pink and white sequin Elie Saab gown that split opinion online.
That sets the stage for this year’s 6th annual gala, held Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles. Charlize Theron received the Icon Award, Colman Domingo the Vantage Award and John Carpenter the Luminary Award, with Rolex presenting and Robert Rodriguez, Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw co-chairing. Eva Longoria was on the guest list, and she arrived in a dramatic black gown that had the carpet talking.

The ‘Desperate Housewives’ star wore a striking black off-the-shoulder gown that hugged her petite frame. The dress had a dramatic mermaid-style silhouette with a structured neckline and glittering embellishments at the hips. The sweeping skirt was finished with pleated detailing, which gave the hem plenty of movement as she posed.
It was a polished pivot from last year’s pastel sequins. Where the 2025 dress went for shimmer from head to toe, this gown relied on shape, structure and texture. The off-the-shoulder neckline and fitted bodice flowed into a flared skirt that made her entrance feel cinematic.

Her accessories kept the focus on the gown. She added plenty of sparkle with dazzling diamond earrings and statement rings, and her brunette hair was swept into a chic updo with blunt bangs. The jewelry came from Parure Atelier.
The bangs gave the look a slightly retro edge, which suited the gown’s sculpted lines. Together, the updo and the neckline put the emphasis on her shoulders and face, so nothing competed with the dress itself.

Longoria also shared carpet moments with other guests. Photos from the night show her posing with Rhea Seehorn, Issa Rae and Hannah Waddingham, a lineup that added extra star power to the arrivals. That kind of group shot has become part of the gala’s charm, with stars mixing across film, television and music.
Black turned out to be a recurring theme. Charlize Theron turned heads in daring sheer black lace, while Jessica Lange made a rare red carpet appearance in a sophisticated black lace gown. Jessica Biel went for black velvet with a thigh-high slit and extravagant feather detailing.
Others took different routes. Demi Moore wore a dramatic two-tone gown with a sculpted black strapless bodice and a voluminous lilac skirt, and Kate Hudson embraced old Hollywood glamour in a sparkling strapless creation. Joey King wore teal and black with opera gloves, and Adria Arjona wore a strapless black gown with a white bustier. Against that backdrop, Longoria’s mermaid gown stood out for its clean lines and sweeping hem.
The music came from Taylor Swift, who arrived in a pale blue pleated silk Dior gown with a beaded bow. She later performed “The Fate of Ophelia” live for the first time, with acoustic accompaniment. It capped an evening that mixed fashion, film history and fundraising.
The event is often called the Met Gala of the West, and it lands right after the worldwide fashion weeks, so plenty of looks arrive fresh off the runway. The gala raises money for the museum’s exhibitions, public screenings and education programs. Last year’s edition collected a record $12 million-plus.
