‘Office Romance’ Star Jennifer Lopez (57) Out-Carmens ‘Carmen’ in a Plunging Black Gown and Fur Wrap
Jennifer Lopez knows how to make a night out at the opera feel like a main event. Her latest evening at the LA Opera was no exception, arriving as the company kicked off its 41st season in grand style. It also came during a very glamorous stretch for the singer and actress, with fashion weeks and fur season colliding.
The occasion was the opening night of a brand-new production of Bizet’s ‘Carmen’, staged by Thaddeus Strassberger and conducted by Domingo Hindoyan, who is starting his first season as Music Director. The production is drenched in Spanish Gothic splendor, and the evening continued with a black-tie Opera Ball celebrating the company’s 40th birthday. It was the kind of night that practically demands a dramatic entrance.
Lopez delivered one. She attended the performance in Dolce & Gabbana and shared photos of her outfit with the simple caption “Night Out,” a look that served up Spanish Gothic drama of her own. The pictures show a plunging black gown with a deep V neckline, draped under a cognac-brown fur collar and oversized fur cuffs.

The layers are what make the look. A black fringed shawl embroidered with florals is draped over her shoulders, and a flash of aqua satin lining peeks out beneath the fur. It adds a pop of color against all that black and brown.
She kept the jewelry delicate, with a bow-style necklace resting against her neckline and a black clutch in hand. The wall of vintage paintings behind her only adds to the old-world mood. It’s moody, theatrical and exactly in tune with the Gothic design of the production she came to see.

The fur is no accident. On Sept. 29, a roundup noted that she had welcomed fall in a sheer black Dolce gown and a black fur coat. That look drew praise for how expensive and fabulous she looked.
Days later, at the Stella McCartney show in Paris, she wore a latte-colored peplum top with a matching pencil skirt, topped with a dark brown fur shawl, suede clutch and cognac stilettos. Her opera outfit is the sultrier evening-wear version of that same idea. The cognac fur ties the two together.

The designer link is worth watching too. On Oct. 11, Lopez teased a new project with Dolce & Gabbana in a video that also showed off a darker, shorter hair look with smudged black eyeliner and nude lipstick. Then came the opera, in Dolce & Gabbana again.
It also isn’t her first time pairing black glamour with the house. Her first Met Gala appearance was in an all-black Dolce & Gabbana gown with plenty of ruffles and lace. Two decades later, she is still choosing the same brand for dramatic evenings.

The LA Opera noticed. In response to her post, the company wrote, “What a night! ✨ Thank you for joining us for opening night of Carmen!” That is a warm nod from an institution that clearly enjoyed having her in the audience.
Her turn at the opera also follows a pattern. Dua Lipa made a surprise visit to the Teatro alla Scala earlier in September, so Lopez joins a growing list of pop stars heading to the opera house. With more than 239 million followers on Instagram, her post spreads the word about the production far beyond the usual audience.
‘Carmen’ stars Rihab Chaieb, Joshua Guerrero, Kathleen O’Mara and Liam James Karai, and the production runs through Nov. 7. Lopez’s outfit may have put the spotlight on the audience for one night, but the show is the real draw. The run is a good reason for any fashion fan to make a trip downtown.
As for Lopez, she carries her own stage experience into any room. Her recent Las Vegas residency was built around Broadway-inspired numbers, so an evening at the opera feels like a natural fit. It’s a fitting match of performer and venue.
