Film festivals usually belong to the veterans, but every so often the newcomers steal the carpet. The Newport Beach Film Festival has built a reputation on mixing established stars with rising talent, and its honors event is where that blend shows. This year, one name in the second group was getting plenty of attention.

The 27th annual festival runs from October 15 to 22 and spotlights more than 100 feature films from around the world. Its Festival Honors event took place on Sunday, October 18, at Balboa Bay Resort in Newport Beach, California, the third day of the festival. The ceremony was filmed for broadcast on PBS SoCal during the awards voting window in January.

Among the guests on the carpet was Inde Navarrette, who attended the Newport Beach Film Festival Honors as one of Variety’s 10 Actors to Watch. She arrived in a periwinkle satin gown with a high neck, red-and-pink floral details and a fringed skirt with a high slit. She finished the look with red heels, and the polished carpet photos have been circulating widely.

The appearance capped a busy weekend. Navarrette went straight from the Academy Museum Gala on Saturday to the festival on Sunday, where she was celebrated at the Honor Brunch. She had just met several people she has long admired.

Speaking to Variety‘s Marc Malkin on the carpet, Navarrette called the gala “amazing.” She added, “You’re just overwhelmed and kind of drowning in everybody that you have looked up to, possibly ever.” She also said she was honored to be among members of the Academy and to get an inside scoop on that world.

Navarrette singled out Jessica Lange and Pamela Anderson, praising both as icons. She described Anderson as someone who carries herself with grace, honesty and creativity, qualities she aspires to. For a young actor still near the start of her career, the starstruck energy felt genuine.

The honors event celebrated a lineup of performers and filmmakers. Taraji P. Henson received the Artist of Distinction Award, Jack O’Connell took the Outstanding Achievement in Acting Award and Mckenna Grace earned the Spotlight Award. Sosie Bacon received the Breakout Award, and casting director Sarah Finn received the Casting Visionary Award.

Variety’s 10 Actors to Watch class included Esmé Creed-Miles, Mariana Di Girólamo, Rosalind Eleazar, Guitarricadelafuente, Summer H. Howell, Jaafar Jackson, Ruth Madeley, Ray Nicholson and Joseph Zada. Navarrette was recognized for ‘Obsession,’ the low-budget horror movie that made her a star. The film has become a genuine phenomenon, and it eventually surpassed ‘Enter the Dragon’ as the highest-grossing film ever made on a budget under $1 million.

Her next moves are even bigger. Navarrette has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming ‘X-Men’ film, where she will play Rogue. She is also preparing to host the ‘Saturday Night Live’ Halloween episode, a combination of late-night comedy and superhero action that marks a big expansion for an actor who became famous in a horror film.

She is already preparing for the physical side of the superhero job. Stunt training, she joked, is a welcome change. “I’m the laziest person, and I am very excited to get up and move my body,” she told Variety. The comment drew smiles online, as fans appreciated a candid take from someone about to start a demanding franchise role.

Navarrette’s festival look worked in part because of the contrast with her gala outfit the night before. At the Academy Museum Gala she went for a couture polka-dot statement, while the Newport Beach outfit leaned into sunlit florals and movement. The fringe hem added a playful touch that suited the coastal setting.

Her red-carpet appearances have been closely followed all year. Few young actors have had a run like hers, moving from a micro-budget horror hit to a Marvel role and a hosting gig within months. Every new carpet photo now feels like part of a bigger story.

For a festival built on spotting the next generation, she was an ideal face for the evening.
