Hidden details are a long tradition in superhero marketing. A single frame of promotional art can contain a clue that sends fans scrambling for their zoom tools. That is exactly what has happened with the first official key art for ‘Mister Miracle‘.

The adult animated series from DC Studios is based on Tom King and Mitch Gerads’ acclaimed comic run. It has been generating buzz ever since it was announced at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June 2025. The studio has been revealing details slowly, which makes every new image feel like a major event.

A closer look at the official key art reveals a significant tease. A massive figure resembling Darkseid sits enthroned behind the foreground, framed by red mechanical patterns. His stone-like face and heavy armored frame are unmistakable to fans of Jack Kirby’s New Gods.

In front of him, a figure in a green cape stands with his hands bound by chains. The image sets up the central tension of the story, a man known for escaping any trap facing the tyrant who raised him. It also confirms that Darkseid will be a major presence in the series.

The show follows Scott Free, the worldwide celebrity known as Mister Miracle and the greatest escape artist who ever lived. He and his warrior wife, Big Barda, seemed to have built a perfect life on Earth. Then everything begins to unravel.

War erupts between the planets Apokolips and New Genesis. Scott’s cruel adoptive father, Darkseid, appears to have captured the Anti-Life Equation, a weapon that would give him total dominance over the universe. As the body count climbs, Scott may be the only one who can stop the slaughter.

The series will mark Darkseid’s debut in James Gunn’s DC Universe. The character was last depicted on screen in ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’, where he was voiced by Ray Porter. No one has been announced to voice the DCU version.

Tom King has teased that Darkseid and Orion have been cast and that the voice work is impressive. Concept art shown at Annecy also featured Orion, Highfather and Granny Goodness. For now, the identities of those performers remain under wraps.

James Gunn Confirms ‘Mister Miracle’ Casting After Peter Safran’s Accidental Leak

DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran revealed that Josh Hutcherson will voice Scott Free and Mackenzie Davis will voice Big Barda. First-look images show the actors’ likenesses worked into their animated counterparts. That fits the studio’s stated approach, since Gunn has said that actors who voice DCU characters will play them in live action when the chance arises.

King has called the relationship between Scott and Barda the key to the whole series. That makes the casting of Barda especially important. Fans are now waiting to see who will fill out the rest of the New Gods.

Safran also revealed that the show is targeting a 2028 release on HBO Max. The first season consists of eight episodes running about 30 minutes each. Animatics have reportedly been completed for all of them.

King serves as showrunner and wrote every episode himself, building on what he learned co-creating ‘Lanterns’. Gerads is attached as a producer. The animation is being handled by Titmouse.

King’s original run was published in 2017 and was praised for blending existential dread, depression and domestic life against an intergalactic war. It won an Eisner Award and is widely seen as one of the great modern superhero comics. The series is expected to be a faithful adaptation, though some of its themes are heavy.

It is also the second adult animated series from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation, following ‘Creature Commandos’. Gunn has confirmed that it takes place in the same world as the live-action projects. That means it will matter to the wider DCU, not just to animation fans.

With the key art now teasing Darkseid, the next big reveal will likely be the actor behind the villain. Orion’s casting is also pending, along with the rest of the supporting players. Each announcement should add more clues to the show’s tone.

Until then, the hidden detail in the artwork gives fans plenty to examine. It shows the creators are leaning into the mystery and the mythology.
