‘Lupin’ Season 3 Recap and Ending Explained: Assane’s Final Trick and the Villain Who Just Walked Back In
The ‘Lupin‘ ending has fans rewinding the final episodes for good reason. Assane Diop spends the latest run of episodes stealing the Black Pearl, earning the support of the French public, faking his own death and saving his estranged mother’s life. That is a lot to pack into one season, even for a gentleman thief.
With the next chapter arriving on Netflix on October 23, now is the perfect moment to look back at how everything wrapped up. Here is a full recap of what happened, how Assane pulled off his last trick, and the cliffhanger that has everyone talking.
Recap and How Assane Disappeared
The season opens with Assane returning to Paris for a second shot at his only failure. Back in 2017, he tried to steal the Black Pearl, a priceless jewel from the Franco-Tahitian war, but was caught in the process. This time he warns the museum owner about the exact date and time of the heist, and still gets away with it.
His escape ends with a fall from a rooftop. Everyone is led to believe he has died, except for his sidekick Benjamin. The stunt gets the heat off his back and lets him quietly protect Claire and Raoul from the press.
Then the plan collides with a problem nobody saw coming. An unknown person contacts Assane claiming to hold his mother, Mariama, and threatens to kill her unless he steals valuable items. The kidnapper turns out to be Keller, Assane’s old boxing coach, who spent 25 years in jail and blames Assane for it.
The Black Pearl Ending Explained at the Arc de Triomphe
The finale brings everything to the Arc de Triomphe, where Keller expects a buyer for the pearl. Instead he finds Assane waiting. Assane has also left detective Guédira a message telling him that he and the pearl will be there.

The deal Assane offers is simple. He persuades Keller to hand over the pearl by promising to let him go free, but it is a double cross and Keller runs straight into the arms of Captain Sofia Belkacem. Classic Assane, and a satisfying payoff for a villain who spent the season pulling strings.
The real magic comes next. Assane puts the pearl inside a rose and hands it to a woman nearby, and Bruno later claims it by spinning a story about being the date who stood her up. When Guédira finally arrests him, Assane no longer has the pearl. The ending also pays off in a sweet way, since Bruno and Manon sell the pearl and buy back the old boxing gym in Marseille, naming it Lupin.
Why Mariama Is the Biggest Question Mark
Assane’s mother finally reunites with her son and her grandson, and for a moment the season feels like a warm family story. Mariama even helps retrieve incriminating evidence by disguising herself to help her son. She proves she is every bit as sharp as he is.
Then the final scenes pull the rug out. The cliffhanger suggests Mariama is not who we thought she was. The reveal shifts how viewers read nearly every moment she shared with her son.
The theories are already piling up. One asks whether Pellegrini forced Mariama to entrap Assane, or whether he had something to do with Babakar gifting young Assane his first Lupin adventure. Nothing has been confirmed, which is exactly why the speculation keeps going.
Pellegrini Returns and What Comes Next
The biggest shock is who is pulling the strings. The letter is sent by Hubert Pellegrini, Assane’s long time enemy. The envelope contained a photo of young Assane holding his first Arsène Lupin novel, a clue that his enemy knows far more about Assane’s past than anyone realized.
Series creator George Kay has made his intentions clear. According to Looper, Kay says Pellegrini will always be Assane’s archenemy, and that bringing him back was part of “building the legacy of that central antagonism” in the show. In other words, this is not a one time cameo.
Netflix has been careful about what it reveals. The streamer has not released a detailed synopsis, though Pellegrini’s appearance and Assane’s fate in prison could serve as a starting point. The new season has eight episodes, with Ludivine Sagnier, Antoine Gouy and Soufiane Guerrab returning alongside Omar Sy.
So with the answer about Mariama just around the corner, do you think she was ever truly on Assane’s side, or has Pellegrini been playing her since the day that first Lupin book landed in young Assane’s hands?
