As autumn settles in, television schedules frequently pivot toward darker folklore and chilling atmospheric mysteries. The enduring legacy of Eastern European mythology offers complex figures rarely explored with nuance on modern screens. For generations, traditional tales reduced these characters to two-dimensional monsters meant purely to frighten children around late-night fires.

Recent years, however, have marked a noticeable creative shift across prestige television toward dismantling ancient archetypes. Contemporary creators increasingly dissect moral ambiguity, challenging audiences to rethink long-standing assumptions about heroism, wickedness, and female power. This evolving appetite sets the stage for a narrative experiment that marries brooding detective noir with centuries-old witchcraft.

Stepping into that space is ‘Yaga‘, an ambitious dramatic horror series that transports the iconic myth of Slavic folklore into a seductive modern mystery. Adapted from creator Kat Sandler’s acclaimed 2019 stage production, the eight-episode series deconstructs traditional storytelling by presenting an alluring narrative where ancient secrets linger beneath contemporary dilemmas. As Sandler told Variety regarding the project’s feminist themes, “We don’t often get to watch women behaving badly in a way that we can enjoy and root for.”

Cast and Storyline Preview: A Twisted Mystery in Whittock

Set against the foggy backdrop of Whittock, British Columbia, ‘Yaga’ centers on the disappearance of Henry Park, the heir to a commercial fishery. Noah Reid of ‘Schitt’s Creek’ stars as private investigator Rapp, an outsider who arrives in town with flashy habits and a determination to solve the case. Rapp finds himself paired with Carson, played by ‘Letterkenny’ standout Clark Backo, a disciplined local detective determined to protect her community.

The investigation quickly collides with Katherine, an enigmatic university professor played by ‘The Matrix’ icon Carrie-Anne Moss, who harbors a penchant for young students and ancient Slavic rituals. Hudson Williams of ‘Heated Rivalry’ takes on a dual role, portraying both the missing heir Henry and an eerie lookalike named Logan Casey. As the detectives pull at conflicting threads, the quiet veneer of Whittock unravels into a hall of mirrors steeped in ancient witchcraft.

Translating her stage play to television gave the creative team an expansive canvas to layer complex clues and atmospheric tension. “The fun thing about transitioning something from theater to film is you get to put so many more Easter eggs visually in it. You get to direct the eye with the camera to highlight lots of little tiny pieces and really build the mystery, build the sex, build the horniness by just being able to zero in on it a lot more, rather than just seeing one big picture of it,” Sandler remarked in an interview with IGN.

With co-directors David Frazee and Rachel Talalay establishing a visually moody tone and an ominous score courtesy of Trevor Yuile, the series crafts an arresting Halloween mystery. Supporting cast members such as Sheila McCarthy, Megan Follows, and Patrick Gilmore round out an ensemble where every resident harbors a secret. Between its folklore roots and witty dialogue, ‘Yaga’ promises to deliver an unforgettable supernatural thriller.
