‘Carrie’ Is Coming Back: Prime Video Renews Mike Flanagan’s Stephen King Series for a Second Season
Stephen King’s first novel has now been told on the big screen several times, but never before as a full television series. When Mike Flanagan’s ‘Carrie‘ arrived on Prime Video on October 7, it gave the horror classic its first TV adaptation, with all eight episodes dropping at once.
The show stars Summer H. Howell as Carrie White, a sheltered teenager whose life changes when her father’s death sends her into public high school, with Samantha Sloyan as her fiercely protective mother, Margaret. Flanagan wrote and showran the series and directed four of its episodes, while King serves as an executive producer.
Now the story is not over. Prime Video has officially renewed ‘Carrie’ for a second season, according to Deadline, with the announcement arriving two weeks after the first season’s release. King said in the announcement that he and Flanagan “are excited about what comes next,” and Flanagan will return as showrunner.
The numbers behind the decision were strong. Prime Video said the series reached No. 1 in more than 105 countries after its debut and topped the streamer’s weekly global TV series rankings, though the company does not release viewership figures.
It also extends a streak for the platform. Every Prime Video young adult series that has premiered in the past six months has been renewed, including ‘Elle’, ‘Off Campus’, ‘Every Year After’ and ‘Sterling Point’. ‘Carrie’ is the second Prime Video series built on MGM/UA material to launch, following the ‘Legally Blonde’ prequel ‘Elle’, which has also been renewed.
The renewal is especially welcome because the first season diverged from the ending of King’s book and closed on a cliffhanger. Flanagan’s version keeps the major beats of the original, including Carrie’s powers, the prom and her complicated relationship with her mother, but adds twists that hint Carrie may not be as alone as she believes.
Prime Video says the next chapter will take her beyond the event that has defined the character for generations, with new revelations, major character arcs and shocking twists. Flanagan has said that continuing past that familiar ending was part of his vision from the start.

The renewal also moves Flanagan closer to a goal he has talked about openly. He has said that his dream scenario is a three-season arc for the story, which means he is now two-thirds of the way there if the plan holds. Season two does not yet have a release date.
That long view fits the way the show was structured. The series stretches the story’s building cruelty across a full season, following the small everyday choices that lead to a single devastating night, and it deliberately leaves room to explore what happens afterward.

The first season was led by Howell, who was chosen after a casting call that drew nearly 1,500 hopefuls, alongside Sloyan, Siena Agudong, Alison Thornton, Joel Oulette, Josie Totah, Arthur Conti, Thalia Dudek, Amber Midthunder and Matthew Lillard. Prime Video has not yet said which cast members will return.
Reaction has been largely positive. The series drew praise for Flanagan’s modern take, its themes and the performances of Howell and Sloyan in particular, though some viewers were divided over the changes from the novel. King has also publicly praised the adaptation.
The news arrives during a packed stretch for the filmmaker. Flanagan wrote the story for the DC Studios film ‘Clayface’, which arrives in theaters this weekend, and he is also developing ‘The Exorcist: Martyrs’. His long run of King adaptations, from ‘Gerald’s Game’ and ‘Doctor Sleep’ to ‘The Life of Chuck’, makes ‘Carrie’ another chapter in a relationship that has defined his career.
For horror fans, the renewal adds to an already busy season, with a hit streaming series, a major studio release and more to come.
With no release date set, the next steps will be casting updates and story details as production gets organized. Given Flanagan’s track record of tightly planned arcs, fans can expect a clear destination in mind.
For now, the message is simple. Carrie White’s story is not over, and the show that brought it to television has earned another chance.
