Jacob Tremblay Is Ready to Suit Up as Robin in James Gunn’s ‘The Brave and the Bold’
The Boy Wonder has had a long and complicated history on screen. Robin has appeared in live-action and animation for decades, but he has been absent from the big screen for years, a gap that James Gunn’s DC Universe is now preparing to fill.
The vehicle is ‘The Brave and the Bold’, the DCU’s first Batman movie, which has been pitched as the story of Bruce Wayne and his biological son, Damian Wayne, who becomes Robin. Gunn has called Damian his favorite Robin and described him as a little assassin whom Batman tries to bring into line, and the film is intended to mark the beginning of the Bat-Family in the new continuity.
Now one actor who has already stepped into the role in animated form says he is ready for the live-action version. Speaking to ScreenRant in an exclusive interview, Jacob Tremblay said “It’d be a privilege to play that role,” adding that he would totally do it and that the stunts alone would be insane.
Tremblay voiced Damian Wayne in the animated series ‘Harley Quinn’, which makes him one of the many actors to have played Robin in some form. The comments came during an interview with ScreenRant’s Tatiana Hullender, who was speaking with him about ‘Wildwood’, and he was asked directly whether he would be open to playing the character in the DCU.
His answer was quick and playful. He joked about his own creativity before saying he would jump at the chance, and the enthusiasm suggests that his time with the character left a mark.
Tremblay is hardly a stranger to the speculation. He has been named in fan casting lists for Damian, which cite his work in films such as ‘Room’, ‘Wonder’ and ‘Before I Wake’ as evidence of his range, along with his voice work in ‘Harley Quinn’.
That kind of attention is typical for a role like this. Since the film was announced, fans have floated names for both Batman and Robin, from Jensen Ackles and Alan Ritchson to a range of young actors, though none of it is official.
For now, there is little concrete to report. No actor has been cast as Batman, there is no release date, and Gunn has said that plenty of things are in flux regarding the story, including details about Bruce’s parentage. Andy Muschietti, the director of ‘The Flash’, remains attached to direct, and Christina Hodson has been reported as the writer.
Muschietti has also said the project has been postponed a bit and is not currently in active development, as he works on a science fiction movie he wants to direct. Casting is generally expected to begin only once a screenplay is in place.
The timing of Tremblay’s comments is interesting, since the DCU is just now stepping into Gotham with its horror film ‘Clayface’, which opens in theaters on October 23. That movie does not include Batman, and it carries no post-credits scene, so fans looking for hints about the Caped Crusader will have to wait.
That leaves ‘The Brave and the Bold’ as the most anticipated piece of the puzzle. Gunn has said he has heard from a huge number of big-name actors who want to play Batman, calling him the one character everyone wants to play, which suggests the studio will have its pick when the time comes.
Bringing Robin to the DCU is a significant creative choice. The character has long been tied to the campy tone of the 1990s films, and for years studios have avoided him, so a version rooted in Grant Morrison’s comics offers a very different approach.
The Damian story is darker and more character-driven, built on a father and son who don’t understand each other. If the film stays close to that idea, it could give the DCU a fresh take on a character that has often been misunderstood.
For now, Tremblay’s enthusiasm is just that, a willingness to do it if asked. But it shows how much interest there is in the role and how closely fans are watching the casting process.
Until the studio announces more, the question of who will wear the cape and the mask remains wide open.
Who should play Robin in The Brave and the Bold?
