The Fantastic Four Take Center Stage: New ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Look Shows Reed Richards Basking in the Ballpark Spotlight

Superhero teams usually arrive in a movie wearing their game faces. They stare down villains, brace for impact and deliver dramatic lines about the fate of the world. So it’s refreshing when a new image shows one of Marvel’s most famous heroes simply waving to a crowd.

That’s the mood of the latest look from the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ preview that aired during Game 1 of the World Series. It’s a warm, sunlit moment on a baseball field, and it gives fans a glimpse of the Fantastic Four before the multiverse comes crashing down around them.

The new look at members of the Fantastic Four in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ shows Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards smiling and raising one arm in a Brooklyn cap and a light-blue uniform with the number 4 on the chest. A second frame shows the stadium with a long, stretched blue arm reaching across the field. It captures the character’s powers and personality in a single glance.

The scene takes place at Ebbets Field on Earth-828, the retro-futuristic world introduced in ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps.‘ That film is set in 1964 and begins as the world celebrates the fourth anniversary of astronauts Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm becoming a superhero team after cosmic ray exposure. It also introduces Reed and Sue’s expected child and the arrival of Galactus.

In the preview, Reed throws the ceremonial first pitch to Joseph Quinn’s Human Torch, with Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s Thing nearby in a Brooklyn cap of his own. Real MLB stars watch from the dugout, but the focus stays on the family. It’s a small moment that reminds audiences who these characters are before the story pulls them into a larger war.

The baseball scene was hinted at before it aired. A retro-style poster showed a stretchy blue arm reaching out with a glove to catch a ball, while the bottom of the artwork teased which team would ‘Flame On’ and which would get ‘Clobbered,’ nods to the catchphrases of the Human Torch and the Thing. It set expectations for something playful.

That playful tone carries over into the preview itself. One player jokes about the size of the pitch, and the broadcast booth reacts with astonishment at the length of the stretch. It’s a rare chance for the First Family to have fun.

The new image also gives a clear look at the uniforms. Marvel’s promotional team cards show the Fantastic Four in blue-and-white outfits that represent a slight move away from the ‘First Steps’ aesthetic. Aside from the Thing, the members wear thick jackets over their bodysuits, and a Hasbro action figure gave fans their first clear look at Johnny in the new design.

The uniform in the ballpark scene, with its turtleneck and circular 4 emblem, fits the retro setting. It suggests the team’s look may shift depending on whether they’re at home or on the front line.

The Fantastic Four are expected to be one of the film’s emotional engines. Doom hails from their universe, and Sue Storm explains in the footage that Victor von Doom used to be kind and caring before everything he loved was taken from him, an allusion to the loss of his wife and son. That history gives the team a personal stake in the conflict.

Doom also appears very interested in Reed and Sue’s child, Franklin Richards, who carries the Power Cosmic. That connection makes the family’s moments of calm all the more poignant. The warm ballpark scene is likely to look very different once Doom arrives.

The Fantastic Four’s arrival in the wider MCU has been teased since the fourth teaser, which showed Ben Grimm meeting Shuri and King M’Baku in the desert. The World Series preview moves from the ballpark to the Avengers, the X-Men and the Wakandans, tying the family into the larger conflict. It’s a sign that the 4 will interact with nearly every other group in the film.

Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Moss-Bachrach all return for the film, which Anthony and Joe Russo direct. It opens in theaters on December 18, followed by ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ on December 17, 2027.

For now, the image offers a moment of joy before the storm. Fans will be watching to see how long it lasts.
