Few procedurals can turn a routine missing-person search into something this unsettling without losing their heart. The latest ‘Tracker‘ ending does exactly that, and it leans on the compassion of its victims as much as on Colter Shaw’s skills.

The CBS drama premiered on February 11, 2024, and it is adapted from Jeffery Deaver’s novel ‘The Never Game’. Season 4 kicked off on October 4, with Justin Hartley’s lone-wolf survivalist still crisscrossing the country for reward money. The fourth episode, “Purification,” aired on October 25 and was written by Sharon Lee Watson and Dominique A. Holmes, with Tori Garrett directing.

It starts with a simple job and ends with a house full of secrets. The twist is that the man Colter is chasing has been hiding behind a dead man’s identity, and the woman he is looking for has been fighting to save a teenager.

Roy Dunning hires Colter after his daughter Nicole misses his birthday dinner, an $8,000 assignment that takes Colter to Danville, Utah. Nicole’s phone is still in her apartment, her friends haven’t heard from her, and the police won’t help. Colter finds a cupcake box and a note in the trash, which suggests she had gone out to meet someone.

Randy traces the cupcake sender to Stephen Jones, a married man Nicole had been seeing. Stephen admits they were together once Colter threatens to speak with his wife, and Colter has him show where they last talked at a public park. There Colter finds a bracelet Stephen gave Nicole. Stephen turns out to be a liar rather than a kidnapper.

The real story begins with a frightened runaway named Jason Williams, who needed protection rather than posing a threat. Nicole takes him to a gas station to find help, but a man driving a camper van arrives, assaults an employee and takes them both. Colter then spots Nicole’s wrecked car being towed away from that station.

Inside the car, he finds a teenager’s hoodie with a tiger club logo. A visit to the club reveals that a man named Tate Montgomery owns a camper van with a similar logo. The club had also revoked the man’s membership over creepy behavior toward teenagers, and its records gave Colter an address.

Inside the home, Colter finds signs that a young boy was held captive, along with the skeletal remains of the real Tate Montgomery. A camcorder shows footage of a man torturing a kid in the basement. The man using the name is Montgomery’s stepson, Elias Williams, who has been collecting his Social Security payments, and he is also Jason’s father.

Jason’s parents, Elias and Cheryl, used their religious beliefs to justify the brutal treatment they called purification. Jason’s hospital clothing links him to an earlier medical emergency involving bleach, and an abuse investigation had been opened, but the family could not be found. Jason eventually used a fire to create the opening to escape.

Randy tracks Elias’ phone to a storage facility, but Cheryl drives in and helps him get away just as Colter nearly reaches him. Nicole and Jason stay captive while the couple argue over what to do with the woman who witnessed their abuse. Nicole frees her hands and uses her restraints against Cheryl, forcing a crash, and she and Jason run into the woods.

Jason’s injury makes running difficult, yet he tries to draw his father away from Nicole, and she intervenes when Elias reaches him. Colter arrives and kicks Elias in the chest as he lunges with a knife, stopping him without killing him. Cheryl is knocked unconscious in the crash, and the episode does not establish that Nicole kills her.

TV Fanatic argued that Colter’s rescue almost felt secondary, since Nicole and Jason had already saved each other in so many ways. The same review also found one key lead too convenient, because Colter would have had nothing to follow without a chance sighting of that car.

Nicole reunites with her father at the hospital, and Jason receives care. Jason tells Roy that Nicole saved him, Nicole credits Colter with saving them both, and Roy hands over the reward. Reenie then confirms that Jason’s parents have been arrested and that an aunt in Texas can take him in.

The lighter threads offer some relief. Reenie signs a lease on an old bank building with a vault, finally ending the team’s office search. Jenna Nova delivers the bench seat Colter bought at her repair shop, and they make plans for dinner at a nearby diner, though the date happens offscreen.

The next episode, “Need to Know,” airs on November 1 from 9:30 to 10:30 p.m. ET/PT on CBS, and Jensen Ackles returns as Russell Shaw. Colter recently got a text from Russ apologizing for being missing and promising they would talk soon. That return should stir up the Shaw family history that keeps pulling Colter back.
