‘Youth’ Episode 7 Recap and Ending Explained: Alex Finds Patrick’s Pros and Cons List and Walks Away
Midlife romance comedies love to hand their heroines a perfect moment right before pulling the rug out. The ‘Youth‘ ending does exactly that, with a quiet kitchen discovery that lands harder than any big blowup.
HBO’s British-made comedy premiered on September 20, 2026, and was created by Sharon Horgan, who also stars. The 8-episode series follows Alex, a 50-year-old literary agent, as she juggles dating, aging parents and a son who isn’t quite grown up. Rupert Friend plays her love interest Patrick, with Sharlene Whyte as Sam and Aran Murphy as Alex’s son Ruari.
The seventh episode, “Last Night on Earth,” aired on October 25 and was directed by Jim O’Hanlon. Alex finally seems to have it all, and then a single note in Patrick’s kitchen ends her run.
The episode opens with Alex scrolling through missed calls from Sam and others while a text from Patrick gets an instant reply. She ignores one of Sam’s calls, and in bed she asks Patrick whether she is having it all right now. Soon after, she misses her bus and decides to walk, shrugging it off.
At the firm, everyone cheers, and Alex is due for a promotion that day. Sam’s announcement speech keeps getting interrupted, though, and a flower delivery takes the wind out of Alex’s sails. Sam is also dealing with new insecurities in her marriage, and the tension between the two friends builds.
The agency is buzzing because Jessie has been nominated at the Women’s Lit Awards, while Charlotte is getting a Lifetime Achievement award. Charlotte’s daughter, Livonia, then arrives to complain that her mother hasn’t mentioned her once in interviews. She even demands a press conference, but Alex calms her down by sharing her own experience.
Another client, Yafa, is blocked and increasingly paranoid about a stalker. Alex uses her mother’s health as an excuse for her own absent-mindedness, which sparks a desire to visit her parents.
Ruari, who isn’t up for the trip, has a date with Plum. They share a kiss at an old bar, even after Plum’s older brother turns up, though the night ends awkwardly. Ruari excuses himself, and when he comes back, Plum has fallen asleep.
It’s a small, quirky storyline that gives the episode some lightness. It also shows that Ruari is feeling the pressure of dating a slightly older woman.

That night, Alex, Ruari and Patrick attend a dinner hosted by Lorcan, who says he has a big announcement. He reveals that he and Theresa are trying for a baby, and Alex instinctively tells him he has been a terrible father to Ruari and shouldn’t try again. The dinner dissolves into chaos, and Ruari uses it as an excuse to leave early.
The scene matters because of what comes next. A conversation about who gets to start a family hangs over the rest of the night.
Alex goes back to Patrick’s place and finds a note in his kitchen listing the pros and cons of being with her. The pros are warm and full of nice things, but the con column has a single entry: Alex cannot give him a family of his own. Reading it breaks something in her, and she walks away, leaving Patrick confused about what happened.
Earlier in the episode, Patrick had asked Alex about her HRT patch, and she had just snapped at Lorcan over starting a new family. The two scenes sit uncomfortably close together. The ending gives Alex her biggest setback of the season at the exact moment she felt most secure.
The finale, episode 8, airs on November 1, and it leaves plenty of threads dangling. Alex’s relationship with Patrick is in limbo, her friendship with Sam is strained, and Ruari is figuring out his own romance. The Women’s Lit Awards also loom over the agency.
Do you think Alex made the right decision by walking away from Patrick?
