Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. Share the Screen in Marvel’s Latest ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Promo
Marvel’s marketing machine for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has settled into a rhythm of almost daily drops. Fresh footage, ticket spots, poster art and brand collaborations have arrived in rapid succession, all pointing toward a December 18 release. For a film that is competing for attention with ‘Dune: Part Three’, the studio is clearly trying to keep the conversation constant.
The campaign has leaned heavily on the film’s biggest draws. Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. already reunited in a short promo for Bilibili World in China, and Marvel has aired a baseball-themed spot during Game 1 of the World Series, showing Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards throwing a first pitch to Joseph Quinn’s Johnny Storm before Doom crashes the party. Another recent spot used the rallying cry “Stand together”, and the studio has also released a theater “Silence Your Phones” public service announcement with members of the cast.
Now another promo is making the rounds, and it brings Evans and Downey together again. The 38-second video shows Evans, as himself, in a brown button-up shirt standing beside Downey, who wears a green jacket covered in patches. Behind them is a stained-glass hall that looks like Doom’s throne room, and the video carries a Marvel watermark.

The jacket is the detail fans are zeroing in on. Downey’s green, patch-covered jacket matches the one he wore in the new introduction added to ‘Avengers Endgame: Encore’, in which he and Evans thank audiences for watching and remind them to see ‘Doomsday’ on December 18. Most of the patches are parody references to Marvel characters, including Reed’s Repairs for Reed Richards and Xtreme Energy for the X-Men.
Another patch reads Kirby’s, a nod to comic artist Jack Kirby, who co-created many of Marvel’s best-known heroes. The visible patches in the new clip include several of those references. It is a playful way to tie the franchise’s past to its newest villain.
The new promo arrives as part of a flurry of footage built around the Avengers regrouping. One spot appears to show Thor using the Bifrost to transport his fellow Avengers, while another has John Walker (Wyatt Russell) joining Steve and Sam in a scene that puts 3 former Captain Americas in the same room. In the World Series commercial, Thor is bothered that Steve has been wielding Mjolnir all these years after ‘Endgame’.
One spot closes with Steve holding up the hammer and asking whether it bothers Thor, and Thor admits it does. That joke has become a running thread across the campaign. It also shows Marvel leaning on humor and character interplay, not just spectacle.
A curious feature of the newer clips is how little of Doom they show. Downey’s villain has remained largely absent from these promos, which keeps him shrouded in mystery. Instead, the villain has been the face of the film’s merchandising, art and theater displays.
Marvel’s promo art has also leaned on stained glass, with Doom rendered as a mosaic in greens, golds and oranges. The throne-room imagery, with its runic carvings and glowing windows, has become a signature of the campaign. Even Jack in the Box teased a collaboration by placing its mascot on a Doom-style throne.

There is a good reason for the saturation. ‘Doomsday’ has been breaking presale records, with a tracker estimating more than $65 million in domestic presales about 50 days before release. The film also brings together the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men against Doom, which requires a lot of explaining to casual viewers.
Pairing Evans and Downey is also a smart choice for audience familiarity. The 2 actors helped define the original Avengers era, and now they are on opposite sides of the story as Steve Rogers and Doctor Doom. Even without much footage of Doom, their presence together sells the idea of a reunion.
With just under 2 months to go, expect more of these short promos. The question is how much of the film Marvel plans to hold back. For now, the patches may offer the most fun to unpack.
