Jennifer Lawrence Officially Confirms Her Return as Katniss in ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’
Few franchises have a grip on pop culture like ‘The Hunger Games’. Eleven years after ‘Mockingjay: Part 2’, the five films in the series have taken in more than $3.3 billion at the box office, and Panem is about to return to theaters. The new prequel arrives with a fresh cast, a young hero and an old-school mystery: how much of Katniss Everdeen will actually appear?
The question of Jennifer Lawrence’s involvement has been hanging over the film for almost a year. Reports in December 2025, first from journalist Jeff Sneider and then confirmed by Deadline, said that Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson would reprise Katniss and Peeta. But the studio never made it official, and Lawrence had only seemingly acknowledged the news earlier, in a conversation where she remarked that it was out on the internet.
That has now changed. Appearing on the ‘Call Her Daddy’ podcast, Lawrence was asked about going back to Katniss and officially confirmed her return in ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’, which opens on November 20. She described the experience as unbelievable, saying it was the same crew, the same camera operators and the same assistant director she had worked with many times.
Lawrence said the reunion with Hutcherson and Woody Harrelson was incredibly emotional. She added that she and Hutcherson did not walk to the bathroom without their arms around each other, calling it beautiful. She also joked that Harrelson came through the window of her hotel room uninvited, since it would not be the same otherwise.
Her mention of Harrelson is notable. Joseph Zada plays the younger Haymitch Abernathy in the film, and Harrelson’s involvement had not been officially confirmed, though his voice from ‘Catching Fire’ appears in the trailer. Lawrence’s comment suggests he was part of the reunion, although the nature of any role remains unclear.
Based on the source novel, the return is probably brief. In Suzanne Collins’ book, Katniss and Peeta appear in a short epilogue set some time after the events of ‘Mockingjay’, sitting with an older Haymitch. The novel’s epilogue spans only 2 pages and contains no spoken dialogue, which suggests the film version may be a flash-forward cameo.
Director Francis Lawrence has said he is grateful for Lawrence’s contribution to the series 14 years after the first film. The details of the cameo are being kept under wraps, and it is not yet known whether she will appear in anything beyond that. Fans will find out on opening day.
‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ follows 16-year-old Haymitch on the morning of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell, the biggest games yet with twice as many tributes. It is set 24 years before Katniss and Peeta first entered the arena. Zada leads the cast, with Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird and McKenna Grace as Maysilee Donner.
The ensemble includes Ralph Fiennes as President Snow, Elle Fanning as a younger Effie Trinket, Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman and Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee. Glenn Close, Ben Wang, Maya Hawke and Kelvin Harrison Jr. also star. Francis Lawrence directs his fifth film in the franchise, and the film reportedly originally ran for 4 hours and 12 minutes before being cut down.

Lawrence’s confirmation adds a layer of emotion to what could otherwise feel like a standard prequel. Her last appearance as Katniss was in 2015, and since then she has become one of Hollywood’s most decorated actors, including a seventh Golden Globe nomination for ‘Die My Love’. Having her return, even briefly, links the new story to the one that started the franchise.
It also gives the film a bridge for longtime fans. A prequel set decades before the original risks feeling distant, but the sight of Katniss and Peeta can reconnect the audience to the emotional stakes. Whether the cameo is a quiet epilogue or something bigger remains the great unknown.
With the premiere only weeks away, the marketing is likely to lean on the nostalgia. For now, the confirmation is enough to turn a long-running rumor into a certainty. The odds, as ever, are in the fans’ favor.
