James Spader and Terry Matalas Say Ultron Has Some of the Best Lines in ‘VisionQuest’

Marvel’s villains rarely get a second act, and even fewer get one more than a decade after their defeat. Ultron, the rogue artificial intelligence that terrorized the Avengers in 2015, has found a surprising new life in ‘VisionQuest‘. The Disney+ series closes out the trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ and continued with ‘Agatha All Along’, and it has handed one of Marvel’s most menacing machines a very different kind of story.

James Spader returns as Ultron for the first time since ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, 11 years after he originally played the character through performance capture. At the end of that film, Vision confronted and seemingly destroyed Ultron’s final robot body, though the moment happened off-screen. ‘VisionQuest’ reveals that Vision uploaded Ultron into his mindspace, where the two now share a head.

That setup has turned the machine into one of the show’s most talked-about characters. Spader and showrunner Terry Matalas have now said in an interview clip that Ultron has some of the best lines in the series, and the clip describes the dialogue as philosophical. It is a notable claim for a series with several AI personalities, including J.A.R.V.I.S. and F.R.I.D.A.Y., competing for attention.

Matalas has explained that the mindspace concept came early. Since Wanda was no longer around, he asked himself who Vision would be talking to, and the idea of Ultron being a major part of the series was there from the start. The interactions between the two characters became a central dynamic.

Spader has described Ultron as someone who both loves and hates Vision, and has characterized their bond as a strange mix of father, son, therapist and psychopath. He has also said Ultron has become a more humane AI since ‘Age of Ultron’, keeping a conflicted relationship with humanity but developing a genuine understanding of it. He has called Ultron one of the series’ driving forces, alongside Vision and Tommy Maximoff.

Spader’s contributions went beyond the dialogue. Ultron’s human form, which features a long, bushy beard, glasses and a regal long coat, was heavily influenced by the actor. Spader reportedly showed up to set with the beard, and he also requested a top hat, which Matalas described as an iconic thing he never would have dreamed of.

The beard, according to Spader, helps convey that Ultron has been a prisoner in Vision’s mind for years, making him a complete dichotomy from the sleek metallic robot of the film. Forbes noted that Spader has been terrific in the role, bringing a dry sense of humor to a murderous AI. That blend of menace and wit is likely why the lines are standing out.

The reaction to the Vision and Ultron pairing has been strong. TechRadar called the Paul Bettany and Spader combination the MCU’s best new double act, and nearly every critic has praised both actors. Some outlets, including Variety, IndieWire and Rolling Stone, were more negative about the show around them, saying it struggles to connect emotionally.

Audience numbers have been healthy. The series was at 90% on Rotten Tomatoes from 77 reviews on October 21, with an 86% audience score from more than 250 ratings. Those figures are mostly driven by the performances, with Ultron’s scenes a frequent highlight.

Episodes 5 and 6, titled ‘Firewall’ and ‘Deadlock’, arrived on Disney+ on October 27 in the US, giving fans another dose of Ultron after he takes control. Episode 7 follows on November 3, and the 8-episode season ends with a finale on November 10. That finale reportedly runs 68 minutes, the longest single episode of any MCU television series to date.

Bettany leads as the rebuilt White Vision and also serves as an executive producer. Ruaridh Mollica plays Thomas, the young man who accompanies Vision, with Emily Hampshire and James D’Arcy voicing F.R.I.D.A.Y. and J.A.R.V.I.S. For a series that began with a quiet identity crisis, the stakes are rising quickly.

With 3 episodes left, the question is where the show’s strongest relationship goes next. Matalas and Spader have suggested that Ultron’s evolution is far from over. For many viewers, that evolution is the main reason to keep watching.
