The cultural landscape of early 1990s Los Angeles marks a pivotal turning point where crack devastation collided with West Coast hip-hop. In FX’s crime drama ‘The Drop: A Snowfall Saga‘, that shift is embodied by label executive Darryl “DG” Grant, whose ruthless corporate methods reflect the streets he escaped. As hustlers trade corners for boardrooms, the fierce struggle for artistic power proves just as lethal as illicit street rivalries.

Expanding the universe established in ‘Snowfall’, the spin-off follows familiar figures striving to build legitimate lives away from crime. When FX developed the project, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the series order would center on Wanda Bell and Leon Simmons. Yet their creative ambitions soon collide with predatory record executives determined to exploit them.

Darryl ‘DG’ Grant and the Power Struggle at Black Banner

Portrayed with arrogance by Brandon Mychal Smith, Darryl “DG” Grant anchors that corporate corruption. As head of Black Banner Music, DG views talent strictly as financial commodities to be milked and discarded. Throughout the debut season, his domineering tactics cause bitter friction with Wanda, who fights to protect rising neighborhood artists.

The simmering rivalry explodes in the season one finale, a 57-minute installment titled “Hercules”. Having wrapped a lucrative compilation album uniting beatmaker Lamar Kinsey and rapper Artillery, DG decides to cut Wanda out entirely. DG fires Wanda on the spot, callously declaring she has zero value without the artists he now controls.

Wanda’s Retaliation and the Master Tapes Heist

DG severely misjudges Wanda’s resilience and her tactical street smarts. After learning that DG ordered the murder of Artillery’s close friend Keith, Wanda allies with Dara to bring the executive down. Together, they recognize that true leverage in the music industry requires holding the physical product.

Executing a heist inside the studio, Lamar distracts security while his brother James Kinsey slips through a back entrance. The brothers overpower guards and steal the physical master tapes of the unreleased album from DG’s office. With the tapes in hand, Wanda seizes complete control over DG’s commercial rollout.

Boardroom Violence and Macroscope’s Severed Deal

Armed with the physical reels, Wanda summons DG to a tense settlement meeting alongside entertainment attorney Leonard Vance. Wanda presents an unyielding ultimatum, demanding the immediate contractual release of her artists in exchange for the stolen music. Rather than negotiating rationally, DG becomes completely unhinged as his corporate authority slips away.

Losing all control, DG erupts in violence and strikes Wanda over the head with a glass object. This vicious outburst marks his instantaneous downfall. Macroscope distributor Jenny Favarella witnesses the assault, immediately terminates her distribution contract with Black Banner Music, and leaves DG stripped of mainstream support.

The Alley Ambush and Leon’s Deadly Intervention

Humiliated and abandoned by his distributor, DG turns to street violence to settle the score. He enlists enforcer Big Deon, played by Quincy Chad, to hunt Dara down an isolated alley. DG intends to eliminate his rivals, unaware that he is walking straight into an ambush.

As DG and Deon corner Dara in the darkness, former enforcer Leon Simmons emerges from the shadows with a firearm. Without hesitation, Leon intervenes to protect Dara, fatally shooting Big Deon on the spot. The abrupt loss of his personal muscle leaves a petrified DG entirely defenseless against his armed rival.

Instead of executing DG in the alley, Leon abducts the fallen executive and drives him to a local spot known as Tino’s. Leon drags DG inside and deliberately turns him over to waiting Crips. As Leon departs, DG’s terrified screams echo into the night, signaling his grim demise.

An Ambiguous Fate and Thematic Repercussions

While the finale leaves DG’s physical death ambiguous off-screen, his record label, influence, and freedom are permanently destroyed. His downfall proves that ruthless boardroom greed invites catastrophic ruin in 1990s Los Angeles. Reflecting on the enduring resilience between Wanda and Leon, Gail Bean noted, “Wanda and Leon both see the genuineness and loyalty they have for one another and that’s going to always keep them connected” in an interview with TVLine.

By leaving DG to the street, ‘The Drop: A Snowfall Saga’ demonstrates that corporate corruption carries the same fatal stakes as the crack cocaine era. With DG utterly eliminated from the boardrooms of Los Angeles, Wanda faces the isolating reality of creative independence.

Do you believe DG survived his terrifying encounter at Tino’s, and what do you hope to see unfold in season two?
