Great actors are remembered through their work, but they are also remembered through the people who stood beside them. In Patrick Stewart’s case, that circle was unusually wide, covering a starship bridge, a mutant school, a Shakespeare stage and, most recently, the biggest crossover Marvel has ever attempted. When news of his passing spread, the tributes arrived from every corner of that world.

Stewart died on October 28 at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 86, and his family announced the news on October 29. The Patrick Stewart tributes from ‘Star Trek’, ‘X-Men’ and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ stars have been arriving ever since, and together they paint a picture of a man who was admired as much for his kindness as for his talent.

William Shatner, who played Captain Kirk, wrote on Instagram that it had been a heartbreaking week and called Stewart a friend, a colleague and a magnificent actor. He added that from the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, Stewart brought intelligence, grace and humanity to everything he did. The week was especially painful for ‘Star Trek’ fans, since Walter Koenig, who played Chekov in the original series, had died only days earlier.

Jonathan Frakes, who played William Riker opposite Stewart’s Captain Picard and directed much of the franchise, shared the family’s announcement with a short message wishing his friend rest in peace. Terry Matalas, who ran ‘Star Trek: Picard’ and is now showrunner of Marvel’s ‘VisionQuest’, posted a photo of Stewart smiling and said it was how he would always remember him. George Takei was among the others who paid tribute.

Hugh Jackman, who co-starred with Stewart across the ‘X-Men’ films, called him one of the greats of stage and screen and a tremendous friend and man. He said he learned a great deal from Stewart and that he would miss him all of his days. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recalled being in awe the first time he saw Stewart on the set of the original film, and described him as brilliant, warm and generous with a sharp sense of humor.

Marvel Studios’ own statement called him a singular talent, a generous collaborator and a true gentleman. It also confirmed that his final on-screen performance will be in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.

No relationship in Stewart’s life drew more attention than his friendship with Ian McKellen. The two built parallel British stage careers, starred together in the ‘X-Men’ films as Xavier and Magneto, and later paired up for ‘Waiting for Godot’ in London in 2009 and on Broadway alongside ‘No Man’s Land’. McKellen once said he felt he would never be as happy again when the London run ended.

He also officiated Stewart’s 2013 wedding to Sunny Ozell. In 2017, presenting Stewart with Empire magazine’s Legend award, McKellen called him one of his heroes. As of Thursday afternoon, no public statement from McKellen had been reported.

Others have remembered Stewart for his values as well as his roles. His family’s statement highlighted his activism on behalf of human rights, survivors of domestic violence, refugees, veterans’ mental health and animal welfare. Many LGBTQ+ fans have also remembered him as an ally who spoke up for decades, often alongside McKellen.

Sir Patrick Stewart was the best. I don’t know what else I can say.

Huddersfield Town, the club he supported all his life, said it was deeply saddened to lose a lifelong supporter. Singer-songwriter Patti Smith wrote a simple message of love on the post announcing his death.

His final appearance as Charles Xavier arrives on December 18 alongside McKellen’s Magneto, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, Alan Cumming and Kelsey Grammer. Whether Disney and Marvel will include a dedication to Stewart in the film hasn’t been announced. For fans, the film will now serve as both an event and a goodbye.

His family has asked that memorial contributions be made to the Johns Hopkins Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center Fund and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s caregiver resources.

What stands out across the tributes is how often they use the same words, among them warmth, generosity and grace. It’s rare for an actor of Stewart’s stature to be remembered so consistently as a good colleague. That consistency may be the best measure of the person behind the roles.

For the people who worked with him, and for the millions who grew up watching, the loss is a personal one.
