Netflix’s ‘A Couple of Lies’ Recap and Ending Explained: Who Killed Tom and Framed Carl?
Nordic noir has undergone an intriguing evolution across global streaming platforms, moving from gritty police procedurals into paranoid domestic suspense. Netflix’s four-part Swedish miniseries ‘A Couple of Lies’ embraces this trend by turning a picturesque vacation exchange into a psychological trap. The limited drama, originally produced under the Swedish title ‘Bytet’, demonstrates how easily picturesque escapes can disguise toxic, manipulative intentions.
Directed by Kasper Barfoed and scripted by Amanda Högberg and Axel Stjärne, the production follows two affluent couples trading luxury residences between Stockholm and Sicily. While the exchange initially promises a rejuvenating getaway for their fractured marriages, the idyllic atmosphere quickly curdles into suffocating distrust and paranoia. Hidden cameras, locked closets, and bizarre household oddities immediately suggest that neither couple arrived with pure motives.
The Gruesome Discovery Inside the Sicilian Well
The central mystery ignites when Carl Wester, an exhausted Swedish hotelier played by Fares Fares, unexpectedly discovers a decomposing corpse inside an outdoor well in Sicily. While local investigators initially link the remains to a missing tourist, the deceased is soon identified as Tom Harris, the reckless brother of property owner Scarlett Harris. Carl quickly faces arrest after digital records place his phone at the villa during the estimated time of death.
Author Stefan Ahnhem praised the screen adaptation of his bestselling novel in an interview with MovieZine, declaring, “Though I’ve worked as a screenwriter for twenty years, this is a dream come true”. Ahnhem’s narrative cleverly exploits Carl’s documented memory blackouts and extreme workplace exhaustion. Carl cannot definitively remember his previous actions, allowing his pregnant wife, Helene, played by Frida Gustavsson, to point detectives directly toward him.
The True Conspirators Behind the Murder Setup
Despite the mounting circumstantial evidence implicating Carl, the finale reveals he had nothing to do with Tom’s violent death. The real killer is actually Adam Harris, an opportunistic artist played by Jakob Oftebro, who married Scarlett primarily for her immense wealth and social influence. Behind closed doors, Adam and Helene had engaged in a secret romantic affair that resumed with deadly consequences.

Trouble flared when Tom walked in on Adam and Helene at the Sicilian estate and threatened to inform Scarlett. During the ensuing confrontation, Adam violently pushed Tom down the stairs, fracturing his skull on the stone below. Rather than confessing to manslaughter, Adam and Helene concealed Tom’s corpse in the well and orchestrated the home swap to frame Carl.
Voicemail Evidence and Corporate Blackmail
The intricate setup unravels when Italian authorities release Carl due to a lack of concrete evidence. Panicked that their scheme is falling apart, Helene ambushes Carl and bludgeons him to death with a heavy object, attempting to stage the killing as self-defense. However, Carl dialed his corporate partner Ragnar right before the strike, accidentally capturing the entire homicide on voicemail.
Rather than delivering the audio to police, the unscrupulous Ragnar blackmails Helene into surrendering all of Carl’s commercial hotel shares directly to him. Deprived of Carl’s fortune, the conspirators realize murdering Scarlett in Stockholm is now their only route to wealth. Adam drugs Scarlett’s drink inside the glass house, while also attacking a prying neighbor named Silvia to eliminate potential witnesses.
The Stockholm Showdown and the Fate of the Survivors
The Stockholm confrontation turns violent when Adam attempts to drown Scarlett in the pool after Helene incapacitates her. Fortunately, Scarlett relies on her practiced underwater breath control to fake asphyxiation until Adam lowers his guard. Surprising her murderous spouse, Scarlett pulls Adam by his legs, causing him to slip and fatally smash his head against the stone stairs.
When Helene reappears, Scarlett confronts her and confirms that Adam fathered Helene’s unborn child rather than Carl. Refusing to harm an expectant mother, Scarlett shows restraint and orders the weeping mistress to flee. Early in development, What’s on Netflix confirmed the project’s ambition, with Ahnhem stating, “I’m confident that my novel will come alive on the screen as the sharp and intricate psychological thriller so many of us are longing for”.
Ultimately, ‘A Couple of Lies’ concludes with Carl’s reputation cleared posthumously, while Scarlett survives the harrowing ordeal and reports the full criminal conspiracy to the authorities. Helene remains an international fugitive on the run across Europe, facing an uncertain future as law enforcement across two countries continues the manhunt.
What did you think of the shocking final revelations in ‘A Couple of Lies’, and do you think Helene will eventually be caught?
