‘The Hunger Games’ Star Jennifer Lawrence Slams the Door on a Mystique Return, and the Blue Paint Is Why

Few superhero transformations were as famously grueling as turning an actress into a blue-skinned shapeshifter. For years, the physical toll of playing Mystique has been part of the character’s off-screen legend, and the conversation around Jennifer Lawrence and Mystique has resurfaced just as the X-Men are about to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Lawrence played the mutant 4 times between 2011 and 2019, starting with ‘X-Men: First Class’ and ending with ‘Dark Phoenix’. Her version of the character was killed off in that final film, but in the multiverse era, almost any character can come back.

That is exactly why fans keep asking whether she might return. Her latest answer, however, is about as emphatic as a Hollywood star can be.

In a video interview with Allure, Lawrence was asked whether she would ever consider another role involving heavy prosthetics, the kind Mystique required. She acknowledged the old rule about never saying never, then made it plain that the answer is a profanity-laced no.

Her reasoning is wonderfully specific. Airbrushing, she explained, is freezing cold, and she happens to be ticklish, which made the process miserable. The experience also taught her how little sleep she can function on and what happens to a person’s patience when it reaches a breaking point.

Lawrence wasn’t dismissing the entire experience. She said her favorite part of playing Mystique was the stunts, describing how fun it was to train and learn how to move. She also shared that her stunt double was a close friend, which made the work even better.

Her least favorite part, she said, was most certainly the paint. It is a line that fits with what she has said for years, when she has repeatedly described the makeup as the one thing she disliked about the job.

Lawrence has described the process in detail before. In a separate interview on the ‘Call Her Daddy’ podcast, she recalled sitting in the makeup chair for 8 hours while making ‘X-Men: First Class’, the film that marked her debut as Mystique.

Even before she landed the role, the screen test took a toll. She had to dye her hair several different colors in a single day, from red to brown, black and blonde, and the dye ended up permanently damaging her hair.

The timing is notable because Marvel is already moving ahead with the character. Rebecca Romijn, who played Mystique in the original X-Men trilogy, is returning for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which is set to arrive in theaters on December 18. Promotional material has shown her in a white X-Men uniform with a new, shorter red wig.

That means Lawrence’s refusal doesn’t leave Marvel without a Mystique, at least for now. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ brings together the Avengers, the original X-Men and the Fantastic Four, and Romijn is part of that reunion.

Fans have also noticed a nod to Lawrence’s version elsewhere in the franchise. ‘X-Men ’97’ reportedly tucked in an Easter egg acknowledging her take on the shapeshifter, alongside references to other actresses who have played her.

Not everyone is convinced the door is permanently shut. A recent industry report claimed Lawrence met with Marvel boss Kevin Feige, sparking speculation about a return as Mystique or in an entirely new role. That report remains unconfirmed, and the details are unclear.

Even if such a meeting did take place, her comments suggest that any deal would probably need to avoid the full-body paint. It’s also worth remembering that Mystique is a shapeshifter, which makes it possible for a future story to bring her back without the old transformation process.

For now, the most reliable takeaway is a simple one. Lawrence loved the stunts, endured the paint and has no interest in repeating the experience. The version of Mystique that fans met in the prequel films may remain a closed chapter, with 4 films to revisit.

Should Marvel bring Jennifer Lawrence back as Mystique despite her dislike of the makeup process?
