Few parts of ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ have generated as much nostalgia as the return of the X-Men. For fans who grew up with the Fox films, seeing familiar faces step into the MCU is a long-awaited moment.

The marketing has leaned into that feeling by teasing the mutants one at a time. Now a fresh batch of artwork gives a closer look at 3 of them.

New promo art for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ features Cyclops, Gambit and Beast, shown in life-size cutout-style images. Cyclops appears in a blue suit with yellow trim and a visor, while Gambit wears a long brown trench coat, carries a staff and holds a glowing card.

James Marsden’s Cyclops is the clearest example of how the mutants have changed. In the Fox trilogy, the X-Men wore black leather suits. The new version swaps those for a blue-and-yellow design that is much closer to the comics.

Marsden has said the film places familiar characters in new, comic-accurate costumes. Some outlets say the suit draws from the animated series and ‘X-Men ’97,’ while others point to Jim Lee’s 1990s design. Either way, the look is a clear break from the early 2000s movies.

The third teaser showed the character in the ruins of the X-Mansion, tearing off his visor in anguish and unleashing a massive red optic blast. Variety noted that the moment suggests he may take a more central role.

Channing Tatum’s Gambit first appeared in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ where he became a scene-stealer after years of failed attempts to get a solo film made. His return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will give the character a much bigger stage.

Tatum has said the film is more dramatic than that comedy, even if the Russo brothers still love humor. He has also confirmed he is dialing down the Cajun accent for the role.

The new art shows the character in a long, textured coat and a purple chest piece. The glowing card in his hand is a reminder of his signature ability to charge objects with energy.

Kelsey Grammer returns as Hank McCoy, also known as Beast. Fans last saw him in the post-credits scene of ‘The Marvels,’ which hinted that the character would have a bigger role in the franchise.

The art completes a trio that represents 3 different eras of the X-Men’s film history. Cyclops is from the original trilogy, Beast comes from the Fox era and Gambit is a more recent addition.

Details about how the characters will be used in the story remain limited. The promotional material focuses on costumes and poses rather than plot.

Cyclops, Gambit and Beast are far from alone. The film’s X-Men lineup also includes Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler and Rebecca Romijn as Mystique.

The third teaser, which played before screenings of ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash,’ showed Xavier and Magneto reunited. It also hinted at a giant Sentinel in the background. The second trailer, unveiled at D23, showed an army of Sentinels facing the heroes.

Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine has not been confirmed, and his absence from the teasers has fueled speculation.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arrives in US theaters on Dec 18, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. Robert Downey Jr. plays Doctor Doom, who leads a threat to the multiverse.

The film brings together the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the Wakandans and the X-Men. That makes it one of the biggest ensemble movies Marvel has attempted, with the series continuing in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ next year.

For the mutants, it is also a handoff of sorts. A separate ‘X-Men’ reboot with a new cast is scheduled for 2028, so this appearance marks a final chapter for several legacy actors.

The new cutouts give a clean look at what the legacy mutants will wear. They also suggest the studio is leaning into comic accuracy, a choice many fans have been asking for.

How the characters are used in the story is the bigger question. With a little more than a month to go, the wait for answers is nearly over.
