Few details in a superhero blockbuster matter as much to international fans as who voices the villain in their own language. For ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, that question carries extra weight, because Doctor Doom wears a mask and the voice does most of the talking. Japan now has its answer for the Japanese-dubbed version of Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, and the announcement came with a deeply emotional layer.

Downey Jr. has spent years defining the MCU as Tony Stark, and his turn as Victor von Doom has been one of the franchise’s most debated pieces of casting. The first full trailer leaned on his voice, with a deep, Slavic-sounding delivery that sharply separates Doom from Tony. Reaction has been split, with plenty of fans praising the effort and others joking about the accent.

Here is the news. Veteran voice actor Toshiyuki Morikawa will voice Doctor Doom in the Japanese dub of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, and Downey Jr. announced it himself in a special video message for Japanese fans. The reveal came on November 3, alongside a new Japanese trailer.

In the video, Downey Jr. told fans he was delighted that Morikawa would handle the Japanese dub and thanked him for bringing the performance to Japanese audiences. He then paid tribute to the late Keiji Fujiwara, saying his wishes would be carried on and inviting fans to meet him in theaters with that legacy. According to Marvel’s official Japanese site, the message ended on that note, and Japanese outlets have run with the emotional angle.

Fujiwara was the longtime Japanese voice of Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark and dubbed the actor in the Marvel films from ‘Iron Man’ onward. He died on April 12, 2020, at age 55 after battling cancer. For many Japanese fans, his voice is inseparable from Iron Man.

Morikawa said he was moved by the message and, in comments published on Marvel’s official Japanese site, joked that it surely wasn’t AI. He added that after 40 years as a voice actor, he wants to deliver the role as “the culmination of those 40 years”. He also said he had seen footage that far exceeded his expectations.

Morikawa spoke warmly about stepping into the Downey Jr. dubbing role after Fujiwara. The two debuted in the same cohort and spent a long time as newcomers in the industry together. He said he wants to reflect Fujiwara’s feelings in the work and has a strong desire not to let anyone down.

Downey Jr. is not playing Tony Stark this time, so Morikawa is not simply filling Fujiwara’s shoes. He is giving a new voice to a character who is meant to feel entirely distinct from Iron Man. Still, the symbolism is obvious, and the announcement ties the film’s villain to the franchise’s history in Japan.

The choice also underscores how much attention Marvel is paying to the character. Doom’s mask means audiences will mostly hear him, and the Russo-directed film puts him against heroes from three different universes. A distinctive voice, in any language, is central to making him feel threatening.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opens in theaters on December 18, with Japan getting the film on the same day as the United States. It is the first film to carry the Avengers name in 7 years, and it opens the same day as ‘Dune: Part Three’. The cast includes Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Pedro Pascal and Anthony Mackie, alongside returning X-Men stars.

The new Japanese trailer also showcases the film’s wider Japanese voice cast, giving fans a first taste of the dub. With Morikawa now confirmed and Downey Jr. himself handing over the baton, the Japanese release has gained an emotional storyline of its own.

What do you think of Robert Downey Jr. personally choosing Toshiyuki Morikawa to voice Doctor Doom in the Japanese version of Avengers: Doomsday?
