‘Madden’ Star Nicolas Cage Admits the Malibu Sinkhole Has Left Him Living in Hotels Just in Time for Halloween
Nicolas Cage has built a career on playing larger-than-life characters, but his real-life housing situation sounds like something from one of his own thrillers. The Oscar-winning actor’s beachfront Malibu home was hit by a dramatic sinkhole in September, and the fallout is still shaping his daily life. Cage has now opened up about what it means for his Halloween plans.
The 62-year-old actor bought the Malibu property in 2024 for a reported $10.5 million. It sits in a gated community on Sea Level Drive near Lechuza Beach, though Cage primarily lives in Las Vegas and also owns homes in New York. The house was reportedly undergoing renovations when disaster struck.
On September 8, a massive sinkhole opened in the driveway at around 5:45 a.m., prompting a response from the Los Angeles County Fire and Sheriff’s departments. It was initially estimated at about 30 feet by 30 feet, and later reports described a crater 25 to 30 feet deep and 60 feet long. Authorities attributed it to coastal erosion, as high surf from Tropical Storm Marie battered the shoreline.
Speaking at L.A. Comic Con on Saturday, Cage was asked about his Halloween plans and explained that his usual traditions have been upended. Because of the problems with his house, he said he has mostly been staying in hotels. As a result, he will not be handing out candy to trick-or-treaters this year, which he said he would normally enjoy. He described himself as effectively homeless for the moment.
Cage still plans to celebrate with his 4-year-old daughter, August. He intends to take her trick-or-treating around houses in Santa Monica so she can collect sweets. He also revealed that once she is asleep, he plans to watch Stanley Kubrick’s horror classic ‘The Shining’.
🇺🇸 Nicolas Cage woke up to find Malibu trying to steal his house. A sinkhole started opening outside his home; Neighbors thought, eh, probably fixable. Then all hell broke loose. By yesterday, the driveway had basically rage-quit and collapsed into a 30-by-30-foot crater. Which, for the guy who played Ghost Rider, is a little too close to the whole “ground opening up to hell” thing. The collapse also triggered a gas leak, though crews got that secured and thankfully nobody was hurt. Ocean waves can now reportedly be seen rushing underneath the supports holding up the house, while at least 5 nearby homes have been declared unsafe. Photos taken on September 8 show a huge hole where the driveway used to be. Asphalt and concrete on the road leading to the garage cracked and collapsed, taking a chemical toilet from a nearby construction site and sections of fence with them. The collapse also damaged a gas line, which crews shut off before beginning repairs.
No injuries were reported, and Cage was not believed to be at the home at the time. The city said the hole had likely started forming a day earlier, and neighbors noted that a smaller sinkhole had appeared on Monday. By Tuesday evening, it had grown enough to be an imminent danger to nearby homes.

The damage reached far beyond Cage’s property. The City of Malibu declared a local emergency and ordered the evacuation of 31 properties. Seven homes were red-tagged because of hazardous conditions, while another 24 were red-tagged because vehicles could no longer reach them safely.
Emergency vehicles such as fire engines could not enter the road, which had narrowed because of the collapse, and the American Red Cross opened a temporary shelter at Malibu High School. The city’s homeowners’ association, which controls the private roadway, began repairs within hours, with work expected to take about five weeks.

Cage has been working to save the property. Within days, he reportedly filed three permits with city officials. They included an emergency building permit for sandbags along the beach and the exterior of the home, along with permits for removing asphalt debris and preparing for shoring installation and soil sampling.
The sinkhole also grew significantly after it first opened, wrapping around the side of the home toward the front entrance. The city has warned that a strengthening El Niño could bring record sea levels and severe coastal flooding this winter, raising the stakes for coastal owners.
The home trouble comes during an eventful stretch for the actor. He recently starred in Amazon’s ‘Spider-Noir’ and will play John Madden in a biographical film about the NFL coach and commentator out later this year. He has also said he plans to appear in an upcoming season of ‘True Detective’.
For now, though, the star of ‘National Treasure’ is dealing with a very different kind of treasure hunt, trying to protect a beachfront home from the ocean. At least he has his daughter, a bag of candy and a classic horror film waiting for him on Halloween night.
What would you do if a sinkhole made your home unsafe?
