Bill Hader Is Heading to ‘Abbott Elementary’, and the Cast Isn’t the Only Thing Teaming Up With Quinta Brunson
Few sitcoms have turned guest appearances into events the way ‘Abbott Elementary‘ has. The ABC mockumentary from creator Quinta Brunson has a habit of dropping surprise cameos into its Philadelphia public school, and the latest casting news adds a big comedy name. Fans are already guessing which part he might play.
The show’s recent run has kept expectations high. A headline from Variety notes that the season premiere hit 6.3 million viewers in seven days, and the series continues to air Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. on ABC, with episodes streaming on Hulu the following day. That kind of audience makes any new guest star announcement a talking point.
The announcement came from an unexpected place. Bill Hader revealed on Monday night’s ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ that he will make a guest appearance later this season on ‘Abbott Elementary’. He was on the show to promote ‘The Cat in the Hat’, and the news turns a voice-acting reunion with Brunson into a live-action one.
Details are tightly under wraps. Neither the character Hader will play nor the episode’s air date has been disclosed, so for now the casting itself is the story. Further information is expected closer to the broadcast.
The two stars’ paths cross in the animated ‘The Cat in the Hat’, which opens in cinemas on November 6. Hader voices the title character, while Brunson is also part of the voice cast. The ensemble includes Bowen Yang, Xochitl Gomez, Giancarlo Esposito, America Ferrera, Matt Berry and Paula Pell.
That connection explains why the news surfaced in the middle of a promotional appearance. For a studio and a talk show, it is a neat tie-in, and for fans it is a reminder that Brunson keeps building a circle of collaborators across her projects.
Hader is best known for creating, writing, directing, executive producing and starring in HBO’s ‘Barry’, which ended in 2023. The performance earned him two Emmys for outstanding comedy lead actor. Since then he has stayed active in both animation and live action.
His recent television work includes playing Abraham Lincoln opposite Larry David in this year’s ‘Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness’. He also appeared in a 2021 episode of David’s ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’. Those credits suggest he is comfortable stepping into a well-established comedy world as a guest, which is exactly what ‘Abbott Elementary’ asks of its visitors.
His wider résumé shows the range he could bring. His voice credits include the ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’ films and ‘Inside Out’, while his live-action work includes ‘The Skeleton Twins’ and ‘Trainwreck’. In a sitcom built on awkward grown-ups and school-day chaos, that mix of deadpan and anxious energy seems like a natural fit.

‘Abbott Elementary’ has leaned on fan-favorite recurring guests such as Zack Fox, Jerry Minor and Matthew Law. It has also built a reputation for crossovers, including a Philadelphia-themed episode with FX’s ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ that came just before the show’s fifth-season renewal. Hader would join a tradition of well-known comedy faces dropping into the halls of the fictional school.
The question is what kind of guest he will be. He could play a parent, a district official, a rival teacher or a visiting expert, and the mockumentary format gives the writers plenty of room for a memorable one-episode character. Until Brunson’s team says more, speculation will have to fill the gap.
Whatever the role, the timing is worth noting. The season is still in its early stretch, which means the episode could land anywhere between now and the finale. Viewers will want to keep an eye on ABC’s schedule for any hints.

It is also another example of how animated projects and live-action series can feed each other. ‘The Cat in the Hat’ opens within days, and the buzz around Hader and Brunson working together could carry into the sitcom’s audience.
