‘Bad Day’ Trailer: Cameron Diaz’s Disastrous Netflix Action-Comedy Gets a Release Date
Cameron Diaz was once one of Hollywood’s most sought-after stars, with hits like ‘There’s Something About Mary’ and ‘Charlie’s Angels’ on her résumé. She stepped away from acting in 2014 to focus on her family, and her return looked far from guaranteed. Then she came out of retirement for Netflix’s ‘Back in Action’ in 2025.
That return paid off in a big way, as ‘Back in Action’ pulled in 46.8 million views in its first 3 days, the biggest debut for an English-language Netflix film since ‘The Adam Project’. Diaz has been busy ever since, with ‘Shrek 5’ on the horizon and a second Netflix outing now ready to go. This time she is flying solo, without her co-star Jamie Foxx.
Netflix has now released the first trailer for ‘Bad Day‘, an action comedy that arrives on the streamer this December. Diaz plays Joy, a single mom of 2 daughters who pinky-promised her youngest daughter she would show up to a soccer game, only for the universe to throw everything in her way. The official synopsis describes her as fighting to keep one little promise on the absolute worst day of her life.
The trailer shows just how badly things spiral. Joy’s car gets towed, her bank account is frozen, and gossiping pilates moms throw passive-aggressive comments her way. She also has to take her father to a dialysis appointment while trying to prove her innocence in a bank fraud mix-up, and the trailer even shows her trying to withdraw just $30 before being labeled a criminal.

Diaz is joined by Ed O’Neill as her father, Rhenzy Feliz as her friend, and Emma Pearson and Jessica Belkin as her daughters. Danielle Brooks, known for ‘Orange Is the New Black’, and John Higgins play a pair of police officers who cross her path. Feliz was previously seen in ‘The Penguin’.
The supporting cast also includes Mark Duplass, Rob Corddry, Ayden Mayeri, Ben Schwartz, Retta, P.J. Byrne, Sherry Cola, Edi Patterson, Beck Bennett, Sam Richardson and K Callan. Ben Schwartz of ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ and Mark Duplass of ‘The Morning Show’ add even more comedic firepower to a film built on escalating chaos.
Jake Szymanski, the filmmaker behind the hidden-camera comedy series ‘Jury Duty’ and the film ‘Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates’, directs from a script by Laura Solon. Solon also executive produces, alongside Mark Moran. Beau Bauman, who produced ‘Back in Action’, produces for Good One Productions.
The film is rated PG-13 for strong language and some sexual references, and it runs 1 hour and 40 minutes. Early reports described it as a comedic version of the 1993 thriller ‘Falling Down’, in which Michael Douglas plays a man who reaches his breaking point while trying to reach his daughter’s birthday party.
‘Bad Day’ was first announced in July 2025, shortly after the success of Diaz’s comeback. Production began in September 2025 in New York and New Jersey and wrapped that December.
The movie is Diaz’s third film since her hiatus, following ‘Back in Action’ and the Apple TV movie ‘Outcome’. It is also a chance for her to lean into her comedy roots, since she has a long history of playing women whose lives are anything but perfectly put together, from ‘There’s Something About Mary’ to ‘Bad Teacher’.
The pitch is simple and relatable. Every parent knows the feeling of a day that goes completely off the rails, and ‘Bad Day’ turns that feeling into an action-comedy with real stakes for a small, heartfelt promise.
Variety describes it as a big-hearted mom-com, one that draws on Diaz’s action background as well as her warmer roles in ‘The Holiday’. Films like ‘Bad Moms’ and the series ‘Catastrophe’ have already mined the indignities of modern parenting for laughs, and ‘Bad Day’ adds action-movie mayhem to that mix. If the final film delivers on the trailer’s energy, it could become another streaming favorite.
