‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Fresh Look at Thor and Yelena Belova Shows Marvel Is Going Back to Basics
Marvel’s marketing machine for ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ has been running at full speed for weeks, and Thor and Yelena Belova keep showing up in nearly every batch of posters, standees and promo art. That kind of repetition rarely happens by accident. It says plenty about which characters the studio believes will carry the film.
The movie arrives on December 18, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, with Robert Downey Jr. playing Doctor Doom. Chris Hemsworth’s Thor returns alongside Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, while Florence Pugh leads the New Avengers as Yelena. In the trailer, Thor appears to take a leadership role, warning the team that they face a threat unlike anything he has encountered.
Now a fresh set of promotional images has put both characters front and center once again. Thor stands in dark armor with a red cape and a weapon at his side, while Yelena poses in a dark tactical suit with her blonde hair swept back. The plain backdrop keeps every bit of attention on the costumes.

Thor’s look leans on the black armor base fans know well, with golden accents, a red cape, dark pants and metallic golden boots. The design draws heavily on his appearance in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, alongside new upgrades that make it distinct, and it counts as his 11th costume in the MCU. The shorter hair from ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ has returned too, and it has been a recurring detail across the promotional material.
Fan reaction has been divided, with the makeover turning a routine costume update into a cultural talking point across social feeds and fan forums. A Hot Toys figure revealed in September gives the best look yet at the outfit, complete with a wired red cape, detailed bracers, textured pants and long boots.
Yelena has become one of the faces of the franchise’s next generation. The New Avengers make their first appearance since ‘Thunderbolts*’, which ended with the group becoming Marvel’s newest superhero team, and as of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ she also goes by the moniker of Black Widow.
Her promotional looks have been consistently tactical. Earlier art showed Yelena holding her batons, and the costumes carry the feel of the updated suits introduced in the ‘Thunderbolts*’ post-credits scene. Another image showed her in a dark green suit with blue eye makeup, which suggests the design is still being shown in different lights.
Thor and Yelena are rarely far apart in the marketing. An image from early October paired them with Reed Richards, and a standee in China placed them beside Black Panther. The pairing gives a veteran Avenger and a newer hero equal billing, which matches the scale of the ensemble.

Taken together, the art suggests the studio is leaning toward more traditional costumes across the board. Earlier batches placed Captain America, Yelena, Thor, Shang-Chi, Red Guardian and the Winter Soldier in comic-accurate designs, while Hasbro has unveiled a line of figures that includes Thor, Cyclops, Beast and Doctor Doom.
The cast is enormous. Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man, Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi and Letitia Wright’s Shuri join the roster, along with Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards and the returning X-Men. With that many heroes competing for attention, the repeated spotlight on Thor and Yelena stands out even more.
Anticipation appears to be building at the box office. Reports claim the film has smashed global pre-sales records with historic international starts, and the next trailer is expected this month. Promo art does not always represent what ends up on screen, but the volume and consistency of these images point to a studio confident in its designs.
The film also sets up ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, which follows on December 17, 2027. For now, all eyes are on whether Thor’s classic armor and Yelena’s tactical suit can headline an ensemble this massive.
