Marvel has spent the build-up to its next big crossover pairing characters who have never shared the screen. Each teaser has introduced a new combination, and each combination has hinted at just how large the story is going to be. Few of those matchups felt as unexpected as the one between Wakanda’s protector and a member of the Fantastic Four.

That odd couple is now getting more context. A newly surfaced description sheds light on how Shuri and Ben Grimm are expected to work together, and it also teases the scale of the danger they face.

The pairing first surfaced in the fourth teaser for the film, which arrived on Tuesday, January 13. It followed 3 earlier teasers built around Steve Rogers, Thor and the X-Men, and it shifted the spotlight to the Wakandans. The clip, which runs for less than a minute, opens with Shuri, played by Letitia Wright, and M’Baku, played by Winston Duke, meeting with Ben Grimm, played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

In the footage, Shuri says in voiceover that she has lost everyone that matters to her. M’Baku introduces himself as the King of Wakanda, and Ben answers with a deadpan Yancy Street address that served as the teaser’s comic relief. Namor, Namora and the Talokanil also appear in the background, apparently in an uneasy alliance against the looming threat of Doctor Doom.

The newly surfaced description spells out how the 2 characters fit together. It says that neither Shuri nor Ben Grimm ever expected to become their planet’s defenders. As the new Black Panther, Shuri draws on her fighting skills, her unparalleled intellect and her unique ability to unite those around her as she stands head-on against the rising threat.

Ben, meanwhile, is described as a skilled pilot who uses his talents to explore the stars. Both characters are said to have been thrust into a spotlight they never asked for, yet they accept their new responsibilities as protectors of their homes.

Thor and Reed Richards Are Teaming Up in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ and Neither Hero Expects an Easy Win, According to First Description

The most eye-catching line comes at the end. The description says the pair must now stand together to confront “a force far greater than even Thanos or Galactus.” That is a bold claim for a franchise that already built an entire saga around the Mad Titan, and it raises the stakes for a movie that features Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.

It also fits the tone of the marketing so far. A separate description for the Avengers says they are ready to do anything to protect the world, even join forces with new allies, which matches the film’s emphasis on teamwork across borders and universes.

On paper, the pairing sounds unlikely, but it has deep roots in the comics. Black Panther debuted in Marvel Comics in 1966’s ‘Fantastic Four’ #52, and the character has a long history with both the team and Doctor Doom. Wright’s Shuri took on the mantle after the death of her brother, T’Challa, and the teaser frames her as someone who has already endured significant loss.

Ben’s presence also carries narrative weight. The Fantastic Four traveled from their universe of Earth-828 into the main MCU, as seen in the ‘Thunderbolts*’ ending tag, and the teaser marks the first time the group interacts with the Avengers’ world. Ben is Reed Richards’ longtime best friend and a former test pilot who was transformed into a rock-like humanoid after being exposed to cosmic radiation.

Wright has confirmed she will return for ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ so Shuri’s story appears to continue beyond this film. The Russo brothers directed the movie, which arrives in theaters on December 18, and it features a massive ensemble that includes the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, the New Avengers and the Wakandans.

For now, the new description gives fans a clearer idea of the emotional core behind 2 heroes who are suddenly responsible for far more than they expected. It also underlines how many different heroes the film is bringing together.
