‘The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth’ Trailer Drops Brad Pitt Back Into A Very Different Hollywood

Few sequels have taken as winding a road to the screen as the one Brad Pitt is about to walk. The ‘The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth‘ trailer campaign has been a slow-burn saga of its own, stretching from a surprise TV spot to a leaked theater reel and beyond.

The project began life as a script Quentin Tarantino wrote for himself to direct. It originated from Tarantino’s scrapped script for what would have been his tenth and final movie. He eventually put it aside before Pitt convinced the filmmaker to let Fincher direct. The result is a rare team-up between 2 of modern cinema’s most distinctive stylists, with Pitt returning to the Oscar-winning role he first played in ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’.

That brings us to the latest development. Netflix has now put out a final trailer for ‘The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth’, a roughly 2-minute-and-42-second look at the film, and it comes with a clear message: get tickets now for the IMAX run. Tickets for the IMAX run were on sale when the final trailer arrived on November 2. The studio is selling the movie as a collision of Pitt, Tarantino and Fincher, and the footage leans hard on all 3 names.

Netflix’s synopsis sets the story in 1977 and notes that it is a very different Hollywood. Cliff is described as a retired stuntman turned Hollywood fixer, a premise that suits a character who already felt like he operated just outside the spotlight.

The ensemble around him is stacked. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan and Carla Gugino star alongside Pitt, and Timothy Olyphant is also part of the cast. Peter Weller, Matt Groove, JB Tadena, Corey Fogelmanis and Karren Karagulian round out the ensemble. That is a deep bench for a film built around a single supporting-character-turned-lead.

‘The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth’ Locks In a Massive Global IMAX Release Despite Theater Chain Pushback

This marketing push has not exactly been conventional. A surprise first teaser debuted during the Super Bowl on February 8, and it was not officially uploaded online at first. That spot jokingly censored references to alcohol, drugs and nudity, and it was scored to a groovy cover of Henry Mancini’s ‘Peter Gunn’ theme.

Online chatter quickly turned to how dark the footage looked. Some outlets noted that the versions people saw were TV rips and that compression explained much of the look. In September, the first official trailer arrived after a leak, and it played exclusively in theaters ahead of screenings of the new ‘Resident Evil’ movie. It opens with a character asking whether you have heard the story about Bruce Lee getting beaten by a stuntman, a cheeky nod back to the original film.

Fans were not entirely satisfied, though. The trailer was criticized for its murky appearance, with viewers saying they could barely see what was happening. It is a familiar complaint that has followed several big trailers this year.

The film arrives exclusively in IMAX theaters on Nov. 25 before it hits Netflix on Dec. 23, playing in the large film format for two weeks. TheWrap describes it as Netflix’s first IMAX movie. It takes the release date that Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew’ previously held before that film moved to February 2027.

The trailer arrived after the Super Bowl teaser and a very brief title announcement clip. The film marks Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s sixth collaboration with Fincher, and Fincher’s longtime cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt shot it. For a filmmaker obsessed with precision, the big-screen format is a statement of intent, and a notable one from a streamer that has often kept its biggest titles away from cinemas.

The film opens in IMAX theaters on November 25, the day before Thanksgiving. It then debuts on Netflix on December 23, just in time for the holidays.

The 2019 film received 10 Academy Award nominations, and Pitt won his first acting Oscar for his supporting performance as Booth. With that pedigree behind it, expectations for the follow-up are sky-high.
