Steven Spielberg’s First-Ever Western Finally Has a Rough Shooting Window

Steven Spielberg has spent more than 50 years jumping between genres, from the shark thriller ‘Jaws’ to the war drama ‘Schindler’s List’ and the dinosaur blockbuster ‘Jurassic Park’. One genre has always stayed just out of reach, and that is the western. Now the filmmaker’s long-promised western is edging closer to reality.

The director has never hidden his love for the form. He has said he regularly rewatches John Ford’s ‘The Searchers’ and ‘Stagecoach’ before starting production on a new movie, and Ford even turns up as a character in the semi-autobiographical ‘The Fabelmans’. Spielberg also produced the western miniseries ‘Into the West’, which ran for 6 two-hour episodes, but he never directed a western feature himself.

The latest update comes from a profile in The Hollywood Reporter timed to Janusz Kamiński receiving the Visionary Cinematographer Award at Camerimage. The two-time Oscar winner confirmed that his next job is Spielberg’s untitled western, which the director hopes to shoot next year. That puts the long-gestating project on a rough timeline for the first time.

Spielberg officially put the project on the map in March, during a SXSW conversation in Austin with Sean Fennessey of The Big Picture podcast. He said he was developing a western, promised it would feature horses and guns, and insisted it would avoid the stereotypes and tropes the genre is known for. He also said he wants to shoot it in Texas.

That was about as much as he would give away. He declined to share plot details, and there was no public script, cast list or production timeline at the time. Even now, it is unclear who is writing the film.

Spielberg had hinted at the idea last year, telling The Hollywood Reporter he still had an appetite for a western. He described it as a genre that had eluded him for decades and suggested it demands an operatic flair he hadn’t yet cracked. The SXSW appearance was the first time he confirmed that something was actually in the works.

The cinematographer’s involvement adds another layer of intrigue. Kamiński and Spielberg have worked together for more than 30 years across more than 20 films, which makes theirs one of the most significant artistic partnerships in American cinema. Their most recent collaboration was ‘Disclosure Day’, which Kamiński shot in a different visual register from their earlier work.

Kamiński is already picturing the landscape, drawing from the world he grew up in. He recalled a region in the Sudeten Mountains with rolling hills that looked like parts of Montana. It is a small detail, but it hints at the kind of landscape the film could feature.

Spielberg’s sci-fi thriller ‘Disclosure Day’, starring Emily Blunt and Josh O’Connor, arrived in theaters on June 12 with decent reviews. It earned around $240 million worldwide against a reported budget of $115 million, a figure that sets the stage for what he chooses to do next. The western marks a pivot to a genre he has openly said he has wanted to tackle for decades.

A shoot next year would mean a release no earlier than the year after, and there are plenty of variables between now and then. Spielberg’s plans can shift, and the project still has no confirmed cast, studio announcement or script credit. Even so, the 79-year-old director has said he has no plans to ever retire.

It is also a notable change of pace. ‘Disclosure Day’ was Spielberg’s ninth science fiction film, so a move into the western would take him far from the genre he has returned to again and again. After 55 years behind the camera, that kind of reinvention is rare.

The timing also fits a broader theme in the filmmaker’s recent work. ‘The Fabelmans’ looked back at the movies that shaped him, and a western built around the same Ford-era influences would feel like a natural next step. If he delivers on his promise of a western without the clichés, it could stand apart from decades of familiar horse-and-gunfight storytelling.

For now, fans will have to wait for casting and plot news. The one thing that seems certain is that Spielberg and Kamiński are finally heading to the frontier together.
