ShiftUp CEO and Stellar Blade director Hyung-Tae Kim has taken a hands-off approach to fan-made mods, including those with adult content, as the game hits PC.

In a recent interview with South Korean outlet This Is Game, Kim expressed support for player creativity through modding, as long as it doesn’t harm the game’s functionality.

Kim sees mods as a way to enhance the Stellar Blade experience. “We don’t have any set policy on this,” he said. “Data modification can range from simply increasing the game speed to completely altering the gameplay itself. As long as it’s not being abused, I believe mods can play a positive role by expanding the scope and experience of the game.”

He even encouraged modders to get more ambitious, suggesting ideas like new outfits or monster designs. “Modders still need to ramp up their firepower a bit. It’s still lacking,” he joked, noting that without an official modding tool, major game overhauls are unlikely.

Addressing the buzz around adult mods, like nude patches, Kim was clear that regulation isn’t on the table. “Stellar Blade is rated for adults only, so I don’t think there’s a strong justification for regulating such mods,” he said. He added that controlling mods is nearly impossible anyway. “Realistically, there’s no effective way to regulate them,” Kim explained. “

As you probably know, mods have never truly been under full control of the developers.” His main concern is modders profiting excessively, as he prefers a community-driven “culture of creation” where players share freely.

Kim emphasized player freedom above all. “Ultimately, it’s a matter of user freedom,” he said. “Once a person owns the game, how they choose to enjoy it is entirely up to them.” He trusts players to act responsibly, concluding, “So no, we don’t have plans to regulate that kind of content. I just trust that everyone is a mature member of society and will act within common sense.”

Kim’s open-minded stance on modding is refreshing in an industry where developers often tightly control their games. Allowing players to explore creative freedom, even with adult mods, respects the adult rating of Stellar Blade and trusts the community to self-regulate. However, I wonder if this leniency could lead to issues if mods disrupt the game’s integrity or spark backlash.

It’s a bold move that could inspire more player-driven content. What do you think about Kim’s approach to mods for Stellar Blade? Should developers regulate adult content or let players decide? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
