Excitement for the upcoming DC Universe film Superman is growing, especially after director James Gunn shared a new close-up image of Ultraman, one of the movie’s main villains. This new look shows Ultraman in a battle-worn state that surprises fans because it looks much scarier and stranger than the versions we saw in earlier trailers.

The fresh image reveals a version of Ultraman that some viewers say reminds them of Doomsday. Based on what we can see, especially around the neck, Gunn suggests Ultraman still looks more human than beast.

James Gunn, who is also co-CEO of DC Studios, shared this image on social media, sparking a lot of talk online. When asked about Ultraman in a recent interview, Gunn gave some hints about the character’s role in the movie. He said, “It’s close. Yeah, I think that’s close. Ultra Man is sort of Lex’s thug and is pretty powerful.” This suggests that Ultraman is connected to Lex Luthor’s plans.

Gunn went further, explaining that the character Hammer of Boravia, who many believe is Ultraman’s secret identity, has links to LuthorCorp, Lex Luthor’s company. “Yes, totally. Lex is connected to everything. There’s nothing bad happening in Metropolis during this movie that doesn’t have some connection to Lex Luthor,” Gunn said.

Fans have been curious about who is under Ultraman’s mask since the first trailers came out, and Gunn’s new image adds more mystery and excitement. It’s clear Ultraman is going to be a dangerous and important figure in the film, especially as a powerful enforcer for Lex Luthor.

With Superman expected to bring fresh stories to the DC Universe, the deeper ties between Ultraman and Lex Luthor hint at a bigger conflict ahead. Fans will be watching closely to see how these characters clash and what surprises the film holds.

Superman is scheduled to be released by Warner Bros. Pictures in the United States on July 11, 2025. It is set to be the first film of the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
