The new survival thriller Eden, directed by Ron Howard, has just dropped its trailer through Vertical. The film features a well-known cast including Jude Law, Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, and Sydney Sweeney. It’s based on a true story about a group of European settlers who move to a remote island in the Galápagos but soon face harsh challenges and conflicts instead of the peaceful life they hoped for.

Set in 1929 on Floreana Island, Ecuador, Jude Law plays Dr. Friedrich Ritter, who escapes Germany with his wife Dora, portrayed by Vanessa Kirby. They want to leave behind society’s strict rules. Friedrich plans to write, while Dora tries to heal her illness through meditation. However, their quiet plans are disrupted when more settlers arrive.

Sydney Sweeney and Daniel Brühl join the group as Margret and Heinz Wittmer, who try to survive in this harsh environment. Then comes Ana de Armas as Eloise, a woman who claims to be a baroness and arrives with two lovers and big dreams of building a luxury hotel on the island.

Life on the island is tough, with bad weather and wild animals, but the hardest test for the settlers is dealing with each other. Jealousy, theft, and lies create tension that threatens their survival.

Here’s What’s Leaving Netflix in June 2025

Eden premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2024. It was released in German theaters in April 2025 and is scheduled for U.S. release on August 22, 2025. The story was written by Noah Pink with input from Ron Howard. Most of the filming took place in Queensland, Australia, with some scenes shot on the Galápagos Islands. The movie’s original title was Origin of Species, but was changed to Eden in late 2023. Hans Zimmer is responsible for the film’s music.

The cast saw some changes during production. Alicia Vikander and Daisy Edgar-Jones were initially part of the project but were later replaced by Vanessa Kirby and Sydney Sweeney. This was partly due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, which slowed many productions.

Critics have had mixed feelings about the movie so far. Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 57% rating, while Metacritic scores it 60 out of 100. Some reviews praise the acting and story, but others say it didn’t live up to expectations.

Based on the trailer and what the cast and crew have shared, Eden looks like a gripping story about survival and human nature set in a beautiful but unforgiving place. Ron Howard’s direction combined with the strong cast promises a powerful film.

In my opinion, Eden could be an interesting watch, especially for those who like survival dramas with real emotional depth. The mix of nature’s challenges and human conflicts seems like a strong recipe for tension. What do you think about this story? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
