Lizzie Borden Takes the Spotlight as Netflix’s ‘Monsters’ Returns With Its Most Haunting Story Yet For Season 4
Ryan Murphy is ready to take his true-crime series, Monsters, in a new direction for its fourth season. After telling the chilling tales of Jeffrey Dahmer and the Menendez brothers in the first two seasons, and with the upcoming third season focusing on serial killer Ed Gein, Season 4 will shine a spotlight on one of history’s most infamous murder mysteries: Lizzie Borden.
According to Variety, filming is expected to start this fall, though Netflix hasn’t officially confirmed the renewal yet. Fans are still eagerly waiting for any news about Season 3, which stars Sons of Anarchy alum Charlie Hunnam as Gein, also known as The Butcher of Plainfield.
Lizzie Borden’s story has become a part of popular culture, inspiring everything from creepy nursery rhymes to movies. If you want to dive into the dark history, you can even stay overnight at the bed and breakfast that used to be the Borden family home in Fall River, Massachusetts. In 1892, Lizzie’s father, Andrew Borden, and her stepmother, Abby, were brutally murdered with an axe in their house.
Lizzie was the main suspect but was eventually acquitted. The case remains a puzzling mystery, with many wondering if others might have been involved, including Lizzie’s uncle, John Morse.
With so many questions still surrounding the case, it’s clear why Ryan Murphy chose this story for Monsters. What isn’t known yet is if Murphy will explore the many theories about other suspects or if he will stick to the idea that Lizzie was the killer. Monsters creator Ryan Murphy has a knack for diving deep into these twisted tales, so fans are curious what direction he will take.
Over the years, many filmmakers have tried to tell Lizzie Borden’s story. Lifetime’s 2014 TV movie Lizzie Borden Took an Axe starred Christina Ricci, while the 2018 film Lizzie, directed by Craig Macneill, took more liberties with the story. It suggested that Lizzie and the family maid, Bridget Sullivan, played by Kristen Stewart, were secret lovers, and that their relationship played a role in the murders.
This information was first posted by Variety.
The Borden murders are one of America’s most famous cold cases, and now, Netflix is preparing to bring this haunting story to a whole new audience. As Collider reports, Monsters continues to explore the darkest corners of true crime, and the Lizzie Borden saga promises to be the most chilling chapter yet.
