James Gunn Gives a Promising Update About DCU’s Wonder Woman and Batman: Could We Get Them Sooner Than We Thought?
With David Corenswet’s Superman doing well in theaters and Milly Alcock’s Supergirl set to arrive next year, DC fans are now waiting for two other major heroes to show up: Batman and Wonder Woman. Neither character has been cast yet in James Gunn’s new DC Universe, but fans are eager to know when they might return.
James Gunn, who is the co-head of DC Studios, gave an update during a chat with Urbana Play radio. He said that the answer depends on how fast the scripts come together. “I mean, it’s not going to be until the scripts are ready. So, both the scripts are being written now, and, if they’re good, then we’ll go into production immediately,” he explained.
Gunn made it clear he’s not rushing the process. “So it really depends on how we can get the scripts done, because the one thing I’m just not going to do is go into production without a script that I feel is fantastic, especially for those characters who deserve the best. I’d rather wait a year than go too soon,” he added.
This focus on quality scripts isn’t new for Gunn. He has already said he picked Supergirl for one of the first DCU movies because of its strong script. He also fast-tracked a Clayface movie thanks to Mike Flanagan’s horror-inspired script, which he loved. Now, fans are waiting to see if Gunn feels the same way about the new Batman and Wonder Woman scripts currently being worked on.
As for Batman, fans already know that The Batman 2 is in development, but that’s part of the Elseworlds label, a separate universe from Gunn’s DCU. Gunn’s own Batman movie will be called The Brave and the Bold, and it will focus on Batman working alongside his son Damian Wayne, who becomes Robin. Gunn has described it as “a strange father and son story” inspired by Grant Morrison’s comic book run. Robert Pattinson won’t be returning for this version of Batman.
Speaking with GamesRadar+ earlier this month, Gunn said there’s no big news yet about the Batman film. He confirmed that “there’s really no new updates” but mentioned that a screenwriter is “hammering away at it.”
When it comes to Wonder Woman, things are even more unclear. A third movie with Gal Gadot was cancelled, and fans have been wondering who will take over the role. Earlier this year, Gunn confirmed a new Wonder Woman movie is in the works, but casting hasn’t begun. He did comment on fans suggesting Adria Arjona for the role, saying she’d make a “great” Wonder Woman, though nothing is official yet.
There’s also a separate project on the way called Paradise Lost, a prequel series set on the Amazon island of Themyscira. It will focus on Wonder Woman’s home before she enters the main DC Universe story.
For now, fans will have to wait to see when Batman and Wonder Woman officially join the new DCU. In the meantime, Superman is playing in theaters, and Supergirl is set to arrive next year.
