Nintendo has finally revealed who will play Princess Zelda and Link in the upcoming live-action Legend of Zelda movie, but fans aren’t exactly happy with the choices. The announcement came straight from Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo’s well-known game creator, who shared the news online earlier this week.

In a message posted on social media, Miyamoto said, “This is Miyamoto. I am pleased to announce that for the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda, Zelda will be played by Bo Bragason-san, and Link by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san. I am very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen.” Nintendo also shared some pictures of the two actors dressed as the famous characters, giving everyone a first look at how they’ll appear in the film.

Bo Bragason, who will play Zelda, is a fresh face to most people. She’s had small parts in shows like The Jetty and Renegade Nell. Her most recent work was in a drama called King and Conqueror, which told the story of William of Normandy.

Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, who will be Link, is a bit more familiar to audiences. He played Miles Wingrave in The Haunting of Bly Manor, a Netflix horror series. He’s also been in The Sandman, and provided the voice of Pinocchio in Disney’s live-action movie.

The casting news surprised many fans, especially because rumors had long pointed to Hunter Schafer from Euphoria taking the role of Zelda. Fans had been suggesting her online for a while, hoping to see her in the role. At one point in 2023, Entertainment Tonight even asked Schafer how she felt about the idea. Her reply was simple: “I mean, yeah! Obviously. That would be so cool.”

After that, many online “leakers” and rumor accounts claimed she was actually being considered for the movie, though nothing was ever confirmed by Nintendo. With Miyamoto’s official announcement, those rumors have now been shut down.

Despite the official casting, many fans were clearly upset, sharing frustrated reactions all over social media. People seem divided over the choices of both Bragason and Ainsworth. Some are disappointed that Hunter Schafer wasn’t picked, while others feel the actors don’t fit the characters as they imagined.
