Jason Momoa is officially stepping into the role of Lobo in next summer’s Supergirl movie, and fans just got a small taste of how he’ll play the character.

After spending years as Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe, Momoa is now part of James Gunn’s new DC Universe. His excitement about playing Lobo has been no secret, and now he’s giving fans a little teaser.

On Instagram, Momoa responded to James Gunn’s recent reveal of the first Supergirl movie poster. The poster, which shows Milly Alcock in her full Supergirl costume, quickly grabbed fans’ attention. Momoa jumped into the conversation by commenting on Gunn’s post with a classic Lobo phrase. He wrote, “Look out bastich,” and followed it up with several “rock on” emojis.

That line isn’t random, “Look out” is actually part of the tagline on the Supergirl poster itself, and Momoa’s use of “bastich” is straight from Lobo’s comic book vocabulary.

This small moment gave fans their first real taste of Momoa’s take on Lobo.

Momoa finished filming his scenes as Lobo back in April, about a month before Supergirl wrapped production. Though his role in the movie is expected to be pretty small, Momoa hasn’t been shy about how excited he is to bring Lobo to life. Earlier this year, he told interviewers that he’d been practicing Lobo’s classic curse words, “bastich” and “fraggin’.”

The plot of Supergirl is still under wraps. DC Studios hasn’t shared much, and fans probably won’t get many updates for a while. James Gunn dropped the teaser poster for Supergirl shortly after the character’s surprise cameo in the Superman movie, but Warner Bros. reportedly won’t show anything else during Comic-Con this year. Instead, Gunn said that their focus will be on Peacemaker Season 2. However, Supergirl might get more attention at another event later this year.

For years, fans had suggested Momoa would be perfect as Lobo. Luckily, James Gunn felt the same way. Gunn said casting Momoa as Lobo was “always part of the plan.” And since Momoa himself has always loved the character, he’s bringing extra energy to the role. People know Momoa from Aquaman and Dune, where his mix of charm and physicality made him a fan favorite. Now, that same energy should make his Lobo stand out.

In Supergirl, Momoa’s Lobo will meet Milly Alcock’s Kara, but their exact dynamic is a mystery. The movie is loosely based on the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic, but Lobo doesn’t appear in that storyline, so adding him is a fresh twist. It’s a risky move, but it could pay off, especially with Momoa behind the character.
