Martha Mansfield was a vaudeville performer and silent film actress. After a successful stage career, she signed with Fox Film Corporation. She was on the verge of stardom after her role in the film The Warrens of Virginia (1924).

During a break in filming on location in San Antonio, Texas, Mansfield was resting in a car when a passerby lit a match. The match ignited her elaborate Civil War costume, which was made of highly flammable material. She suffered severe burns and died in the hospital the next day, November 30, 1923. She was 24 years old.

Florence La Badie

Florence La Badie was one of the most important and popular actresses of the early silent film era. From 1911 to 1917, she starred in over 180 films, becoming famous for her role in the serial The Million Dollar Mystery (1914). She was known for her athletic ability and performed many of her own stunts.

In August 1917, while driving with her fiancé, the brakes on her car failed, and it plunged down a hill. La Badie was thrown from the vehicle and suffered serious injuries. She died from septicemia (blood poisoning) two months later, on October 13, 1917. She was 26 years old.

Soledad Miranda

Soledad Miranda was a Spanish actress who became a star in the cult films of director Jesús Franco. She appeared in horror and exploitation films like Count Dracula (1970), alongside Christopher Lee, and Vampyros Lesbos (1971). She was poised for international stardom.

Miranda’s career was cut short by a car accident in Portugal on August 18, 1970. The car she was traveling in collided with another vehicle, and she suffered fatal skull and spine fractures. She was 27 years old.

Billy Laughlin

Billy Laughlin was a child actor known for his unique, gravelly voice. This earned him the role of “Froggy” in the Our Gang shorts from 1940 to 1944. He was known for his comedic croaking voice and thick glasses.

Connelly’s career was cut short by a chronic heart condition. As he grew into his teens, his health declined. He died from endocarditis, an infection of the heart lining, on July 5, 1922. He was 13 years old.

Dorothy Dell

Dorothy Dell was an actress, singer, and beauty queen who had a brief but bright career in the early 1930s. A former Ziegfeld Follies girl, she was signed to Paramount Pictures and starred in the Shirley Temple film Little Miss Marker (1934). She was praised for her comedic talent and was seen as a potential major star.

On June 8, 1934, Dell was killed in a car accident in Altadena, California. The car she was a passenger in went off the road and hit a telephone pole. She was killed instantly. She was 19 years old.

Carole Landis

Carole Landis was a glamorous actress and singer of the 1940s, known for her roles in films like One Million B.C. (1940) and I Wake Up Screaming (1941). She was also very active in the war effort, traveling extensively to entertain the troops and earning the nickname “The Blonde Bomber.”

Rebecca Schaeffer was murdered by Robert John Bardo, an obsessed fan who had been stalking her for three years. Bardo obtained Schaeffer’s address from her California DMV records, which at the time were not protected by privacy laws, and traveled from Tucson, Arizona, to Los Angeles to kill her on July 18, 1989.
