‘Rick and Morty’ Universe Expands with New Spinoff Announced at Comic-Con
The Rick and Morty universe is growing again. During their big panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Adult Swim surprised fans with the announcement of a brand-new spinoff: President Curtis. The animated series will star Keith David, who returns to voice the same no-nonsense Commander-in-Chief fans loved from his appearances in Rick and Morty.
The show will focus on President Andre Curtis as he leads his quirky staff through wild and strange missions, ones even Rick Sanchez wouldn’t bother with. That means everything from dealing with aliens and weird dimensions to solving paranormal mysteries. According to the official logline, Curtis will be the guy handling problems too bizarre even for Rick.
Keith David shared his excitement about taking on the lead role again. “President Curtis has always been a blast to play. Getting to explore his world more deeply in this new series is a dream. I can’t wait for fans to see what kind of chaos he stirs up when Rick isn’t around to steal the spotlight.”

David is no stranger to voice work. He’s been busy lately lending his voice to shows like Hazbin Hotel, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, Family Guy, Masters of the Universe: Revolution, and many more. He’s also voiced characters in Krapopolis, another animated series from Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon. On screen, he’s popped up in Abbott Elementary, High Potential, and Duster, and will soon appear in The Lowdown on FX.
Dan Harmon and James Siciliano, both executive producers on Rick and Morty, are also behind President Curtis. They’ll be joined by Danielle Uhlarik, Monica Mitchell, and Steve Levy on the producing team. Harmon and Siciliano said they’ve always loved writing for the character.
“President Curtis has always been one of our favorite characters to write — he’s the only person in the multiverse who can go toe-to-toe with Rick and still hold office,” they said. “Now we finally get to go on sci-fi missions from Curtis’ point of view. And with Keith David leading the charge, it’s going to be a wild ride.”
Stephanie Beatriz, known for Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Jim Rash from Community, are also part of the voice cast. That keeps the series tied to Harmon’s creative universe, as both Rash and David previously starred in Community.
Michael Ouweleen, the president of Adult Swim, made it clear they’re all-in on this new project. “This is a series we would have greenlit even if it didn’t have anything at all to do with ‘Rick and Morty.’ President Andre Curtis is just that good of a character,” he said. “The rest of the world the team has fleshed out is super fun and totally stands on its own. We can’t wait for you to see it.”
This isn’t the first time Rick and Morty has expanded. Other spinoffs include Vindicators 2 and Rick and Morty: The Anime. But this time, it looks like the President is stepping into the spotlight for good.
