Superman has been a favorite character for decades, appearing in everything from cartoons to movies. One of the most loved versions is the TV show Smallville, which ran for ten seasons from 2002 to 2011. Fans still remember Tom Welling’s portrayal of a young Clark Kent and Michael Rosenbaum’s memorable Lex Luthor.

Even though Smallville ended almost 14 years ago, the story isn’t over yet. Michael Rosenbaum and the original creators have been working on an animated sequel to continue the story. Rosenbaum recently told fans that the project is still alive, with the right team involved, but they are waiting for the right moment to bring it to Warner Bros.

Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum have been pushing for this sequel, hoping to get the original cast to voice their characters. But the project hasn’t been officially reviewed by Warner Bros. Discovery yet. The company is busy focusing on James Gunn’s new DC Universe plans and the upcoming Superman movie set for 2025. This has made things tricky for Smallville’s return.

Welling spoke about the situation recently on Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast, Inside of You. When Rosenbaum asked if Welling thought Smallville would ever come back, Welling said, “It just doesn’t seem like our show is the type of show where that would happen. I’m smiling and saying it will probably never happen. But I love the idea!”

Before that, Welling and Rosenbaum talked with Smallville co-creator Al Gough, expressing their wish for him and Miles Millar, the other co-creator, to be involved. Gough explained why the project is delayed, saying, “That is the thing, I think the problem with most projects in development in any studio and/or any network is regime change. Warners has obviously gone through a lot, and I think the fact that they are in the process of rebooting Superman again, kind of unfortunately, I think, keeps our thing off the table for a bit. Everything comes around in one form or another, I just read the other day that they are rebooting Buffy [laughs] for Hulu.”

Rosenbaum also mentioned that right now is not a good time to pitch the project because James Gunn is busy managing many new DC projects. Most of these are still early in development, and only a few have started filming.

On top of that, Warner Bros. has already canceled another Superman TV show. This was reportedly done to avoid clashing with the new Superman movie planned for release this year.

So, while fans are eager to see Smallville come back, the road to a sequel is full of challenges. For now, everyone is waiting to see when the timing will be right.
