The latest trailer for The Conjuring: Last Rites has dropped, and it’s ready to freak you out. This film is the fourth, and what seems to be the final main installment in the Conjuring series. It will hit theaters on September 5, 2025. New Line Cinema released this new trailer that’s packed with creepy moments, sure to give fans chills.

Directed by Michael Chaves, who also worked on the previous movie, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, Last Rites follows the famous ghost hunting couple Lorraine and Ed Warren, played by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson.

The story is set in 1986 and connects to an early case from their careers. Although this movie is meant to wrap up the main Conjuring storyline, it doesn’t completely close the door on the whole franchise. Judging by the trailer, the movie has a strong 1980s horror vibe, especially reminding viewers of classics like Poltergeist by Tobe Hooper and Steven Spielberg.

Since the original Conjuring film came out in 2013, the Conjuring Universe has become a successful series, spawning hit spinoffs like Annabelle and The Nun. Even The Curse of La Llorona from 2019, while not officially part of the universe, is linked by tone and style.

The Conjuring: Last Rites is written by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. The story is based on true investigations by the Warrens and was co-created by James Wan and Johnson-McGoldrick.

Besides Farmiga and Wilson, the cast includes Mia Tomlinson as Judy Warren (the Warrens’ daughter) and Ben Hardy as Tony Spera, Judy’s boyfriend. Steve Coulter appears as Father Gordon, and there are other supporting actors too.

Michael Chaves talked about the future of the series before The Devil Made Me Do It was released, saying in an interview, “What [The Devil Made Me Do It] hopefully does is open up this new chapter for the Warrens. This has a very unique ending to The Conjuring films. I would be excited to see where it could go from here.”

Both Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga expressed interest in continuing the story. Farmiga said, “Oh my God, I’d love to [continue]. It’s interesting, we have to up the fear in each one. Demonology is already so high-pitched and operatic.”

In October 2022, it was revealed that a fourth film was in development, with Johnson-McGoldrick writing the screenplay and James Wan and Peter Safran returning as producers. By early 2024, Chaves was officially hired again to direct. Later that year, Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing worked on rewrites to the script, and new cast members Ben Hardy and Mia Tomlinson joined the project.

Filming took place in London from September to November 2024, wrapping up on the 22nd of November. Sterling Jerins, who appeared in previous films, is not returning this time. The music score is composed by Benjamin Wallfisch, replacing Joseph Bishara, who scored the first three movies. Wallfisch also created the music for the Annabelle: Creation spinoff.

Fans should mark their calendars for September 5, 2025, when The Conjuring: Last Rites will arrive in theaters across the United States. With its creepy new trailer and the promise of a chilling 80s horror feel, it looks like this film will deliver plenty of scares.
