The next big Marvel movie, Avengers: Doomsday, is gearing up to be a massive team-up film featuring some of the biggest names in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Produced by Marvel Studios and AGBO, and distributed by Disney, it’s set to be the fifth Avengers movie after Endgame and will mark the 39th film in the MCU.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo with a script by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely, the movie brings together heroes from the Avengers, Fantastic Four, Wakanda, the New Avengers, and the X-Men to face off against the villain Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr.

This movie went through a lot of changes during its development. Initially, it was tied closely to the Kang the Conqueror storyline, with director Destin Daniel Cretton and actor Jonathan Majors on board.

However, after some behind-the-scenes issues, including Majors being fired, Marvel shifted gears. The Russo brothers returned as directors, and McFeely came back as a co-writer. The new title, Avengers: Doomsday, along with Downey’s casting as Doctor Doom, was announced in July 2024. Filming began in April 2025 at Pinewood Studios in England, with shoots also happening in Bahrain. The cast is huge, including many stars from past Marvel projects and other superhero franchises.

One of the new additions confirmed for the film is Joseph Quinn, who plays Johnny Storm, also known as the Human Torch. Quinn only recently joined the MCU in the Fantastic Four movie, which just hit theaters.

Talking with AP Entertainment, he mentioned how different it was working on Avengers: Doomsday compared to Fantastic Four. He explained that on Fantastic Four, the cast was mostly new to the MCU, but in Doomsday, he’s acting alongside longtime MCU favorites and veteran X-Men actors. Quinn almost gave away some details about who he worked with but caught himself just in time, joking about spoilers when mentioning Chris Hemsworth’s Thor.

He said, “It’s encouraging and reassuring to kind of know these characters. I’ve seen Thor in films. I’ve seen lots of people who maybe I can’t mention in films. And to be alongside them is very exciting. Oh… spoilers. Scary.”

Marvel fans already know there’s a long list of characters appearing in Doomsday, but Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and industry insiders have said this list isn’t final. More actors and characters are expected to be announced since not all contracts were settled during the initial reveal.

Meanwhile, the Fantastic Four movie, which introduced Quinn’s Human Torch, is doing well in theaters. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds an 86% approval rating from critics, with the site praising the strong cast chemistry and retro 1960s style. Metacritic reports a generally favorable score of 65 out of 100, while audiences have given it an A – according to CinemaScore.

With Avengers: Doomsday set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, and its sequel, Secret Wars, arriving a year later, Marvel fans have plenty to look forward to in the coming years.
