Stephen King is not just a master storyteller with many books turned into movies and shows; he also shares his honest thoughts on films sometimes, and his opinions usually hit the mark. Recently, he watched what many people call the best Star Wars movie so far and gave it high praise, no surprise there.

He said, “Watched ROGUE ONE with my wife today. We had a ball. Wish I’d seen it in a theater. It has what so many action pictures lack: a beating heart.”

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story came out in 2016. It was directed by Gareth Edwards and written by Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy. This movie is special because it’s the first Star Wars anthology film, meaning it stands apart from the main saga, and it happens just before the original Star Wars movie from 1977. The story follows a group of rebels who steal the plans for the Empire’s deadliest weapon, the Death Star, leading to the Rebel Alliance’s first big win, which we hear about in the classic Star Wars opening crawl.

The movie was well-received by critics and fans alike. Rotten Tomatoes shows it has an 84% approval rating based on 461 reviews, with an average score of 7.5 out of 10. Their summary says, “Rogue One draws deep on Star Wars mythology while breaking new narrative and aesthetic ground and suggesting a bright blockbuster future for the franchise.” On Metacritic, it scored 65 out of 100 from 51 critics, meaning generally favorable reviews. Audience feedback was strong too, with CinemaScore giving it an “A” grade, and PostTrak reporting a 91% positive rating.

Rogue One also earned two Academy Award nominations, for Best Sound Mixing and Best Visual Effects, proving its technical quality was just as impressive as its story.
