David Justice recently opened up about why his marriage to Halle Berry ended, sharing his thoughts during an interview on the All the Smoke podcast with Matt Barnes on August 7. The former Major League Baseball player talked honestly about the struggles they faced as a couple and how their different ideas about marriage caused problems.

Justice and Berry got married in 1993, but he said their honeymoon phase didn’t last long. About five months after tying the knot, he started thinking seriously about their future, especially about having children.

He admitted that his understanding of relationships was limited back then, shaped by what he saw growing up in the Midwest. “I’m looking at my mom — and I’m a Midwest guy. So, in my mind, I’m thinking a wife at that time should cook, clean, [be] traditional, you know?” he explained.

That mindset made him question if Halle was the right person to start a family with. “If we have kids, is this the woman I want to have kids with and build a family with?” Justice said. He recalled thinking Halle “don’t cook, don’t clean, don’t really seem like motherly,” and that’s when problems started to show in their marriage.

Justice revealed that despite their differences, the public didn’t pay much attention to their relationship struggles until he decided to leave Halle in 1996. He also shared that their whirlwind romance led to a quick engagement. “She asked me to marry her after knowing me for five months,” he said. “I said OK, because I couldn’t say no. Who’s going to say no at that time?” He admitted he wasn’t sure if his heart was really in it, but he didn’t want to hurt her feelings.

The couple also faced challenges with their busy careers, which kept them apart for long stretches. Halle was filming movies all over the world, and Justice was dealing with his own life as a professional athlete.

Looking back, Justice said they might have saved their marriage if they had known about therapy. “We spent a lot of time apart because she was doing movies in this country, that country. And we honestly probably could have made it if I knew about therapy. If we knew about therapy, we probably could have made it,” he admitted.

Justice described their marriage issues as mostly coming from immaturity rather than big fights or betrayals. “We never had any major issues like that,” he said. “It’s just… because I was young and had only been in one real relationship before her.” After their divorce, Justice moved on and married Rebecca Villalobos Justice in 2001. Halle Berry, meanwhile, has been open about her dating life and once mentioned she “can’t keep a man.” She is currently in a relationship with singer-songwriter Van Hunt.

David Justice’s honest reflection on his past marriage shows how different expectations and a lack of experience can sometimes lead to heartbreak, even between two successful people.
