James Gunn Says ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 Is Must-See for Understanding the Future of the DCU – Here’s Why

James Gunn’s Superman movie has just hit theaters a few weeks ago, but fans are already curious about what’s coming next in his new DC Universe. The next chapter is Peacemaker Season 2, and according to Gunn himself, it’s going to be more important than people expect.

James Gunn and John Cena recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere of Peacemaker Season 2 in New York on Wednesday night. Gunn explained just how important this new season is for the DC Universe.

“It’s a big part, definitely Superman leads directly into Peacemaker; it should be noted that this is for adults, not for children, but Superman leads into this show and then we have the setting up of all of the rest of the DCU in this season of Peacemaker, it’s incredibly important,” Gunn said.

He also teased that fans should expect many returning and new characters: “Lots of guest stars coming up, lots of characters that are showing up that we’ve already met in Superman. I don’t think there’s anything that I’ve ever done that I love more than this season of Peacemaker, so I’m so excited for people to see it.”

John Cena also weighed in, emphasizing the show’s role in connecting the broader DCU. He said, “This season is about furthering the narrative. Instead of standalone properties, all of the DCU is now connected, as you saw Peacemaker show up in Superman. I think what you see in season two is just a forward of that narrative. That whole DCU through line—it takes the 11th Street Kids through their next adventure, but it also has a lot to do with the DCU going forward.”

This isn’t the first time Gunn has highlighted the importance of Peacemaker for the DCU. Last year, he mentioned that the show’s transition from the DCEU to the DCU would be smooth, and initially claimed that Season 1 wasn’t canon. Later, Gunn revised that statement, explaining that almost all of Season 1 would now be considered canon, except for the Justice League scene, which will be addressed in the new season.

Gunn has been clear that the show will play a major role in shaping the DCU’s future. Last month, he told reporters that Peacemaker will guide fans toward understanding where the DCU is headed. He also hinted at a big upcoming twist, saying, “Yeah, and it’s not what anyone thinks. It’s not what anyone would guess. But I think if people watch the next season of Peacemaker, they’ll see where a lot of these things are going and have a little bit more of a sense of maybe what can happen.”

With Season 2, Peacemaker is no longer just a spin-off but a critical piece of the DC Universe puzzle. Fans can expect a story that continues directly from Superman, introduces new characters, and sets up the larger DCU narrative in ways that could surprise even the most dedicated viewers. According to Gunn and Cena, this season is one fans absolutely cannot miss.
