Marvel fans have been buzzing about Avengers: Doomsday, one of the most talked-about superhero movies on the horizon.

Directed by the Russo brothers with a script by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely, the movie will bring together some of the biggest names and teams in the Marvel universe. From the Avengers and the Fantastic Four to the X-Men, New Avengers, and Wakandans, they will all unite to face Doctor Doom, played by none other than Robert Downey Jr.

The film is set to hit US theaters on December 18, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars following in 2027.

The film promises an enormous cast, with familiar MCU heroes returning alongside actors from Fox’s classic X-Men films. But one name was noticeably missing from the official announcements: Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange.

At first, the actor himself didn’t make things clearer. Earlier this year, Cumberbatch denied being part of the project. But later, during a red-carpet interview at the Sundance Film Festival for his new movie The Thing With Feathers, he admitted to Business Insider that his earlier comments had been a mistake.

“I got that wrong, I am in the next one,” he explained when asked if Marvel had reached out to him after his earlier slip-up.

Given how Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ended and how central his powers are to the ongoing Marvel storyline, it makes sense that he’ll play a role in the battle against Doom.

Still, Cumberbatch is keeping things mysterious. When asked again about his return by ET Online, his only response was: “I wonder… I wonder, I wonder… I wonder.”

The cast list is already stacked with stars including Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Florence Pugh, Simu Liu, Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, Pedro Pascal, David Harbour, and many more.

The story will take place fourteen months after the events of Thunderbolts*, where Doctor Doom rises as the next great threat, forcing heroes from across the Marvel worlds to unite.

With Cumberbatch confirming his return but still keeping fans guessing, it’s clear that Marvel is playing its usual game of secrecy. But one thing is certain: Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be one of the biggest superhero events ever put on screen.
