David Lowery’s long-awaited film “Mother Mary” is finally ready for audiences. After more than two years in production, the film is set to hit theaters in April 2026. Three new posters for the movie were released alongside the official trailer.

The film stars Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel, with Hunter Schafer in a supporting role. The soundtrack features original music from Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff, and FKA Twigs, adding a contemporary touch to the film’s dramatic story. “Mother Mary” is described as an epic melodrama focusing on the relationship between a musician and a fashion designer.

The cast includes Hathaway as Mother Mary, Coel as Sam, and Schafer as Hilda, alongside Jessica Brown Findlay, Sian Clifford, and FKA Twigs. Production began in May 2023 in Germany. Despite the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, filming continued under a special waiver. Hathaway confirmed in July 2024 that shooting had wrapped.

The story follows Hathaway’s disgraced pop star and Coel’s reclusive costume designer as they are forced to reunite for a comeback tour. Most of the film takes place in a single location, mainly showing the two characters interacting in a barn.

Schafer appears briefly as Coel’s assistant. Early reactions describe the film as unconventional, calling it “bewildering” and “a movie about nothing.” Lowery himself described it as “a weird, weird film” during a recent update at the Melbourne International Film Festival.

Mother Mary will be released in the United States by A24 in April 2026. Fans are eagerly awaiting the trailer tomorrow, which will give the first real look at Hathaway, Coel, and Schafer in the film.
