Adam Sandler-Produced Netflix Drama Scores a Near-Perfect Rating on Rotten Tomatoes

Netflix drops so many original films every month that it’s genuinely rare for one to break through the noise on pure critical strength alone. Most new releases arrive with a mix of reviews, some praise, some pushback, and settle somewhere comfortably in the middle of the pack once the reviews roll in.

That’s what makes this particular debut worth paying attention to. A new coming-of-age dramedy quietly slipped onto the platform this week, carrying a reception that almost never happens for streaming originals, and it’s already being talked about as one of the standout releases of the year.

‘Don’t Say Good Luck‘ has debuted with a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes, officially entering a rare club of Netflix original films that have achieved near-perfect ratings from critics. The film currently sits at 18 positive reviews out of 21 total, giving it an average rating of 7.4 out of 10, according to Rotten Tomatoes.

Very few Netflix films have managed to land in this territory. Previous titles that reached a perfect score with a substantial number of reviews include the refugee horror film ‘His House’ and the documentaries ‘Crip Camp,’ produced by Barack and Michelle Obama, and ‘A Secret Love,’ all of which achieved the feat back in 2020. That short list makes ‘Don’t Say Good Luck’s’ perfect debut all the more notable given how infrequently it happens.

The film has also earned strong marks on Metacritic, where it currently holds a score of 72 out of 100 based on ten critics, landing in “generally favorable” territory using that outlet’s weighted average system. Between the two aggregators, the reception paints a picture of a film that’s connecting broadly rather than splitting opinion along the usual lines.

‘Don’t Say Good Luck’ follows Sophie Birenbaum, played by Sunny Sandler, a theater kid preparing to lead her high school’s production of ‘Waitress’ just as her mother’s serious illness upends life at home. Directed and co-written by Julia Hart, the film also stars Melanie Lynskey, Max Greenfield, Stephanie Beatriz, Bebe Neuwirth, and Steve Buscemi, with Adam and Jackie Sandler, Sunny’s real-life parents, serving as producers.

Much of the critical praise has centered on Lynskey’s performance as Sophie’s ailing mother, Elizabeth. Reviewers have singled out her work as a particular highlight of the ensemble, with coverage noting that she remains fully present in the role even as her character’s own condition begins to unravel around her.

That kind of consistent praise across outlets is part of what’s pushing the film’s aggregate scores so high this early in its release window. With only 18 reviews counted so far, there’s still a chance the score could shift slightly as more critics weigh in over the coming days, but the current spread suggests genuine, broad-based enthusiasm rather than a small sample skewing the numbers.

The film also arrives into a genuinely crowded Netflix release calendar, competing directly against titles like ‘The Last House,’ which has held the platform’s top movie spot since its own debut, along with heavy streaming competition from recent Spider-Man releases. Whether ‘Don’t Say Good Luck’ can translate its critical momentum into strong viewership numbers remains to be seen, but a perfect Rotten Tomatoes debut gives it a genuine head start in a release slate that rarely offers this kind of unanimous praise.
