Adam Sandler is setting the record straight after a viral TikTok spread a wild story about him and his daughter Sadie. The claim, which suggested Sandler bought $312,000 worth of handbags to teach a Beverly Hills store employee a lesson, is completely false, the actor told PEOPLE at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Thursday.

“By the way, there’s something on the internet talking about that dumb thing,” Sandler said. “I’ve been hearing about this thing and I saw it, and it’s just insane.”

The TikTok, posted on Tuesday, shows Sandler allegedly telling a story about a store employee telling Sadie she couldn’t touch certain items. The video claims Sandler then spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to prove a point. Sandler laughed off the story, calling it entirely made up.

“It’s just this made-up, weird thing that people ask me about,” he explained. “I’ve never heard of this in my life. That story was 100 percent insane and made-up, and not a word of it is true.”

He also spoke to USA Today, confirming that the rumor had reached his friends. “That was one of the weirdest, dumbest, 100% made up things. It was very odd,” Sandler said. “I don’t know how that [expletive] happens.”

Not everything in the press about Sandler is fake, however. He admitted a story from the New York Post about ordering a large amount of Double-Doubles from In-N-Out Burger at midnight was true. “I have to say, that story is true,” he told PEOPLE with a laugh. “So that one’s true. The other one’s pathetic.”

The actor received the Maltin Modern Master Award later that night at the festival, an honor given to individuals who have significantly influenced film culture. During his acceptance speech, Sandler praised his family. “Thank you for keeping me going all these years. I love you forever. I couldn’t do it without you,” he said, addressing his wife Jackie. “To my daughters, Sadie and Sunny, you guys are my world. I love you two like you’ll never know.”

Sandler, 59, continues to be one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors, known for blending humor with heart both on and off the screen. The actor’s firm debunking of the viral TikTok is a reminder that not everything online is true, even when it involves celebrities and seemingly outrageous stories.
