Adria Arjona has spent the past several years quietly building one of the more interesting careers in Hollywood, moving fluidly between prestige television, dark comedy, and awards-adjacent dramas without ever fully stepping into the world of straightforward action filmmaking. That gap in her resume is about to close in a big way.

Arjona’s rise has included memorable turns in projects like ‘Hit Man’ opposite Glen Powell and a widely praised performance in the acclaimed ‘Star Wars’ series ‘Andor,’ but nothing in her filmography has put her front and center as a full-blown action lead until now. That shift arrives courtesy of a director with a very specific taste for genre chaos.

Ahead of the film’s release, GoldenSeries shared new photos of Arjona stunning at press appearances for ‘Onslaught,’ capturing her at recent promotional events tied to the upcoming A24 release. The film marks Arjona’s first-ever leading role in an outright action movie, putting her at the center of director Adam Wingard’s latest genre experiment.

‘Onslaught’ follows Arjona as a former Army sniper turned single mother living in a desert trailer park, forced to fight back after a rogue squad of genetically engineered super soldiers escapes from a nearby military facility and threatens her daughter’s safety. The film comes from Wingard, the filmmaker behind ‘You’re Next,’ ‘Godzilla vs. Kong,’ and its sequel ‘Godzilla x Kong, The New Empire,’ working once again alongside longtime collaborator Simon Barrett, who co-wrote the film’s screenplay.

That collaboration between Wingard and Barrett carries extra weight given their shared history, since the pair previously created the cult favorite ‘The Guest’ back in 2014. During the film’s Comic-Con panel, that connection was made explicit, with the event confirming that co-star Rebecca Hall will play the film’s central villain, a character directly tied to the same kind of covert military experiments that fueled the plot of ‘The Guest.’

When pressed on whether ‘Onslaught’ functions as a direct sequel to that earlier film, Hall offered a careful distinction during the panel, clarifying that while it is not technically a sequel, it does share meaningful connective tissue with Wingard’s earlier work. That ambiguity has only fueled excitement among longtime fans of Wingard’s filmography, who have followed his genre output closely since his early cult hits.

Adding to that sense of a shared universe is the return of Dan Stevens, who originally starred in ‘The Guest’ as a mysterious former soldier hiding a dangerous secret. Stevens now returns to this loosely connected world alongside Arjona, reinforcing the idea that Wingard is deliberately building connections across his body of work rather than starting entirely from scratch with each new project.

The film’s ensemble cast also includes Alex Pereira, Michael Biehn, Drew Starkey, Eric Wareheim, and Reginald VelJohnson, rounding out what has been described as a gonzo action horror thriller built around a desert-set showdown against an engineered military threat. Production took place in New Mexico, giving the film its distinct sun-scorched, isolated setting.

With ‘Onslaught’ set to hit theaters on September 4, Arjona’s transition into full-scale action filmmaking looks poised to be one of the more talked-about genre releases of the fall. Given the film’s ties to Wingard’s earlier cult favorite, fans of his previous work have plenty of reason to be paying close attention.
