There’s some exciting news coming from Mattson Tomlin, the writer behind the upcoming Aegon’s Conquest spinoff series, and fans of Game of Thrones will be happy to hear it. Even though HBO hasn’t officially given the green light for the show yet, Tomlin shared that he’s still hard at work writing scripts for the project. He also confirmed that George R.R. Martin himself is involved, which is a big relief for fans of the books.

The idea for this spinoff has been floating around since HBO started looking into more Game of Thrones shows back in April 2023. Things really started to pick up last year when Aegon’s Conquest became a serious focus. Fans have been eager to see this part of Westeros history on screen because it shows the very beginning of the Targaryen dynasty and the events that set the entire series in motion.

On July 30, Tomlin answered some fan questions on social media, and even with just a couple of simple replies, he shared some important updates. He mentioned that he’s been writing “LOTS” for the scripts, and when asked if George R.R. Martin was involved, he simply said, “Yes.” That’s great news for anyone worried about the series staying true to the books.

The spinoff will take place before the events of House of the Dragon, making it the next prequel in the Game of Thrones world. The story focuses on Aegon the Conqueror, also known as Aegon I Targaryen, as he unites the Seven Kingdoms with the help of his sisters and wives, Rhaenys and Visenya. This era is full of battles and drama that fans have been waiting to see on screen for a long time.

After the huge success of House of the Dragon, many believe HBO should definitely move forward with Aegon’s Conquest, especially since there are talks that House of the Dragon might wrap up after its fourth season. Plus, fans still have the upcoming prequel series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, set to arrive in 2026 after some delays.

Since HBO hasn’t officially ordered Aegon’s Conquest yet, details like the cast or episode count are still unknown. But Tomlin’s updates make it clear the show is still alive and well in development. With so many Game of Thrones spinoffs rumored or planned, this one might be the most eagerly awaited by fans, and thankfully, it seems like they’re taking their time to get it right.
