Aemond and Alys’ Fiery Relationship Is Coming in ‘House of the Dragon’ — Ewan Mitchell Reveals What Fans Can Expect
House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 2 finally brings Aemond Targaryen and Alys Rivers together, and it looks like this is only the beginning of one of the show’s most talked-about relationships. According to an interview with Decider, actors Ewan Mitchell and Gayle Rankin shared their thoughts about the pair’s first major scene together and teased what fans can expect next.
Episode 2 sees Aemond arrive at Harrenhal after leaving King’s Landing. Confident as ever, he quickly takes control of the castle and kills Ser Simon Strong after refusing his surrender. During the fight, however, one of Simon’s sons manages to stab Aemond in the back. For the first time in a long while, the feared prince is left badly injured and completely vulnerable.
That moment leads to his first real interaction with Alys Rivers, the mysterious woman who has been living at Harrenhal. Instead of standing over others with power, Aemond is forced to rely on someone else for help. Speaking to Decider, Ewan Mitchell said this change was something he really enjoyed playing.
“It was really nice seeing Aemond that vulnerable, like physically. Throughout Season 1 and 2, he’s always this relentless force. He’s always really stoic and strategic and calculated. And there in that moment it just, you know, it spins it on its head.”
Fans of George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood already know that Aemond and Alys eventually form a close relationship, and Episode 2 finally begins setting that story in motion. Mitchell admitted that it was exciting to hint at what is coming next.
“That kind of connection that we have and that energy and what might be there in the future,” he said. Gayle Rankin also spoke about the scene and explained why she thinks viewers should expect surprises this season.
“Yeah, it felt like a really wonderful cliffhanger, an opportunity. It was like a huge breath. Because I think everybody thinks they know how this is going to go. And I think that’s what’s so wonderful about the season is that every turn the show tells you, ‘No, you don’t, no, you don’t.’ Which is really cool.”
Mitchell echoed that idea when talking about the rest of Season 3. “God, just like expect the unexpected. You really don’t know what’s going to happen around every corner this season. Yeah, just a lot of heartbreak. A lot of heartbreak.”
Rankin added that there will also be emotional moments that fans may not see coming. “And like heart surprises. Heart expansion hopefully. I’m excited about that.”
The actors also addressed the growing excitement surrounding Aemond and Alys online. Many viewers have been waiting for the characters to finally meet, especially readers familiar with the books. Their relationship has become one of the most anticipated storylines of the season.

Rankin admitted she understands why fans are excited but also said there is some pressure to deliver.
“‘Match my freak.’ I do love that. No. I’m excited. It’s a little nerve-wracking because I think it has been pretty anticipated and been pretty clear on the internet, that’s what people want. So we’re like, ‘I hope you like it.'”
She also praised Mitchell’s performance, calling him an extraordinary actor and saying she enjoyed working alongside him. Mitchell returned the compliment before jokingly describing the pair with a line that is already getting attention among fans. “We’re a power couple.”
While the romance is only just beginning, Episode 2 makes it clear that Aemond’s journey at Harrenhal will be very different from what viewers have seen before. His meeting with Alys comes at a moment when he is wounded, isolated, and forced to trust someone outside his own family. That creates a very different side of the character compared to the cold and controlled prince audiences have known since Season 1.
Based on what Mitchell and Rankin told Decider, their relationship will become a major part of Season 3. The actors are promising unexpected twists, emotional moments, and plenty of heartbreak as the story continues. If Episode 2 is any indication, Aemond and Alys are about to become one of House of the Dragon’s most important and unpredictable pairings.
