After All These Years, One of the Most Popular Movies Ever Is Getting a Sequel
ionsgate is officially bringing Dirty Dancing back. The studio has confirmed that a sequel to the 1987 classic is now moving forward and heading into active production. The news was first shared through industry reports citing Lionsgate, and it has already sparked a lot of nostalgia among longtime fans.
The new movie will continue the story of Frances “Baby” Houseman and will once again be set around the world that made the original film so memorable. This time, the project is no longer stuck in development. It now has a full creative team and a clear path ahead, with production expected to begin later this year.
According to Lionsgate, the film is being produced by Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson. The two are best known for producing The Hunger Games movies, which became one of the most successful franchises of the last decade.
Their involvement signals that the studio is taking this sequel seriously and wants to protect the legacy of the original film. The screenplay is being written by Kim Rosenstock, whose recent work includes the series Dying for Sex. Rosenstock has also written for shows like Only Murders in the Building, GLOW, and New Girl.
One of the biggest reasons this announcement matters is Jennifer Grey. Lionsgate has confirmed that she is returning as Baby. Grey is not only starring in the sequel but is also serving as an executive producer.
Sources close to the project say she only agreed to return once she felt the story respected the original film and showed Baby at a new stage of her life. Jonathan Levine, who was once attached to direct the sequel, is still involved as an executive producer.
Lionsgate executives have publicly shared their confidence in the team behind the movie. Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, explained that the studio wanted the right group of people to make sure the sequel connects with longtime fans while still feeling fresh for new audiences. The goal is to capture the same emotional energy and music-driven spirit that made Dirty Dancing a global hit.
The original film was released in 1987 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. It was more than a romance, touching on themes like class differences, independence, and personal growth. Industry reports suggest the sequel may be set in the 1990s, around thirty years after the events of the first movie. This would allow the story to focus on Baby as an adult while introducing a younger generation to the world of Kellerman’s Resort.
Patrick Swayze, who played Johnny Castle, passed away in 2009, and the sequel will not recast his role. Jennifer Grey has previously stated that Johnny cannot be replaced, and sources say the film will honor his character in a respectful way rather than trying to recreate the original dynamic.
Grey has recently seen renewed attention in her career. She appeared in the 2024 Sundance film A Real Pain and released her memoir Out of the Corner, where she reflected on her life, fame, and the lasting impact of Dirty Dancing. Her return to the role of Baby has become the emotional center of the sequel.
The announcement comes during a strong period for Lionsgate, which recently saw success with the thriller The Housemaid. By moving forward with a Dirty Dancing sequel, the studio is clearly betting on the lasting power of classic films and familiar stories.
Whether the new movie can capture the same magic without Johnny Castle remains to be seen. Still, for many fans, simply seeing Baby return to the dance floor is enough to make this sequel one of the most talked-about projects currently in development.
